Spear pulled on teddybear palm...

Recommended Posts

I was inspecting palms in the yard last week and noticed that the newest spear (it had two coming up) on my teddybear palm was discolored and dried out.  I pulled on the spear and it immediately came off in my hand.  The larger of the two spears appeared fine - I marked it at the time and it is still growing as of yesterday.  I treated the area with hydrogen peroxide (it bubbled up quite a bit), then applied copper.  When I checked the palm yesterday I can now see what's left of the spear that pulled out is growing and visible.  Fingers crossed.... hopefully tragedy has been averted....

Hi Allen,

I've had that happen at least a dozen times.  I'd pour some diluted copper fungicide into the bud anyway.  With a new spear emerging after the dessicated one, the palm has basically already overcome whatever condition it had.
