"Palms of Southern California"

I have the 2000 version, but in looking at it today, I realized that at that date, many of the Dypsis were just being ID'd or were so new that no one really knew their requirements. Is there a more current version out there somewhere?

There is a 2006 4th edition edited by our own Geoff Stein. Ask him if he'll do a 2011 5th edition for you.

Palms are life, the rest is details.

Agreed !

It would be great with 5 more years of data if a new version could be produced.

Thanks for the info.

For the record, I find it incredibly helpful, and it's only for this reason that I was looking for even more information. I don't want anyone to the wrong impression.

Thanks again!

A new version would be exciting. I've used this book over and over and reference it all the time.

I imagine updating all the species stats and discriptions plus adding all the new Dypsis ect. would take a looooooooooooooong time.

problem is I am computer illiterate and hand copied and pasted all those illustrations... need to learn how to scan in stuff like that and shrink it and place it into some sort of word program and save the whole thing as a document... then it wouldn't be so much work to redo everytime. But indeed there are about 50 new species to add to this thing (mostly Dypsis) and fix the inevitable mistakes in the last edit.

I might be willing to give it a try. Then we could also make it available on line to sell or download for a fee.

I would definitely buy a newer edition. The current edition has been extremely helpful for someone who is getting started in rare palms.

I would also love to get an updated version if / when it becomes available.

Geoff - thanks for putting those together. It's a very valuable resource for me and I study it well before planting almost ever palm in my yard!

Yes Geoff, I think here is a good place to express my THANKS for your work! A great , helpful guide.

Although as I have discussed with some here, it does not offer the "coastal" effect into any advice, but thats fair, since we are in the minority... Mostly I just say almost everything in full sun here except most chamadoreas.

(The full sun is primarily to gain some heat due to the year round low daytime highs..)

I'd buy an online version as well. I'm sure there are multiple computer-literate (if not computer-gifted) folks on this board who could easily digitize a new version.

An updated version both in print and online would be fantastic. I've always admired the amazing precision of the pen and ink sketches with scale references included, very clever. It was always tucked under my arm while palm-shopping.

The last I heard, Southern Calif. is attached to the state of Calif. We grow palms in Northern Calif. too, some that are difficult to grow in S. Calif. How about a book for all of Calif?

Don't think its any bias Dick. Just a gleaning of the local info and put out by the PSSC.

No local knowledge of growing conditions for Northern California.. (or not as much) but I would guess Geoff may part with some stuff...dunno?

Wait...what? Really? When I fly over Fresno, Bakersfield, Atascadero, etc. - I could have sworn that was yet another "flyover" state, and that I was somewhere completely different.
