Is anyone growing this in Central Texas, South Louisiana, North Florida or any other place that gets freezes into the low 20sF every 4-5 years? What are your experiences with the cold hardiness of this palm?

Thanks,

:) Jonathan

Tried it here in Austin a couple of years ago along with H. coriacea. Planted both as seedlings and protected during the winter. Neither survived a low of 23f with protection.

Look elsewhere than the Hyphaene genus--they don't make it out of central florida! Some get killed in the south Florida harsh winters.

With such slow growing palms, it's always a good idea to not "count your eggs before they hatch"; My H. compressa looks ok, but I'm not sayin anything till middle summer!

Mine lost one of the two growth points to bud rot last winter (Jan of 2010). It made it fine through a low of 28 (albeit for less then an hour), but a drizzling rain combined with mid-30th is what did it in. The other bud made it OK.
