cecropia are kinda cool. if anyone has seed send em to ari.

Yes please..... anyone???

Regards, Ari :)

Ari,

These trees are one of the first colonizers in disturbed forest re-genearation. Because of this they grow all over the place here, even coming up in cracks in sidewalks. There is at least one variety that has a grape like fruit that is supposedly quite good. The toucans like them a lot.

Hhhmmm.... are they weeds then? Although weeds there might not mean weeds here, as we do have that long dry season.... If you happen to find some seeds, Don... please remember me :)

Ari,

I will start looking more at the trees to see if I can find some seeds. Since there are so many around I don´t imagine that will be too hard. Yes they are weeds. They provide shade for the other trees to take hold and re generate the forest in tropical America.

Ari, when I find those trees on our little parcel in Hawaii, I remove them as quickly as possible. They grow very fast and seed very freely. When I cut the young trees down, they are almost like a hollow tube, very lightweight, and the big leaves are almost like dried cardboard. Don's description of them as opportunistic trees is very informative. There is a gigantic one on the property next to us, and I hope it never falls toward our little house, it's just massive.

I was just reading up a bit on a Brazilian site about the cecropia. The roots, leaves and other parts of the plants are used as herbal medicine here. One of the main uses is for hypertension. And, the fruits are one of the favorites of sloths. They are sort of grape like in some varieties.

Since Paul is taking a break from posting photos, I thought I would go ahead and post a few more.

Later that night after our palm walk we went to Tin Jo - my favorite Asian restaurant in San Jose.

My dinner - Kung Pao chicken in a nest of fried yuca (that's a quail egg on top).

Yes, it seems like it's always windy in San Jose. The first few times I went to photograph those D. madagascariensis it was so windy that the crowns were blowing sideways so I didn't want to take any pictures. It was a little windy the day we took these, but not as bad as before.

I've experienced a few scary landings in San Jose on those little planes...

Here are a few more photos of the D. madagascariensis lining the entrance drive to the Hotel Intercontinental in Escazú
