I hesitate to even say it, but... Mike, why are so many not planted? I would think getting them to that size is the hard part...! They look awesome though!!

Daryl, cool! gonna add any light for that K.P. ? and is that cerifera? If so, obviously has mine beat! Looks very much like alba, but that is MUCH faster!!

Matt! Incredible! Keep updating..

Troy, once you explained your climate better to me, thats amazing!! :mrlooney:

At first I wanted this thread for "my own"... but I think its WAY cooler to see theprogress shots of different gardens around the world here! post away!!

Bill,i've decided to not plant some of the rarer New Cal palms but pot them up into 110 litre pots in case the better half decides she wants to move/downsize,hence i can take them with me to the next place.I hope this won't happen for the next 20 years or so...here's hoping...Cheers Mike Green(Newcal) :)

go north young man !!! :)

actually Mike, you should get two of each, one in ground and one for transportable reasons.

I'm never planting my Livistona humilis, I've decided, too rare around these parts.

Daryl , Craig ,Len - I planted the Hapala outside in April 2009 , It is protected on one side by a clump of Bamboo. The soil is deep sandy loam and is mulched with sugarcane mulch.

Here is a better pic taken 10 min ago

post-1252-069505800 1304500934_thumb.jpg

Also have had this Cypophoenix elegans outdoors last winter has made 1.5 fronds over 12 months . After seeing Colins elegans and Pogobobs this is one of my favorite palms . Colins leaflets were so tough like hard leather so slow growth aside i am sure it will be a long term candidate for down here , i have a perfect spot in between the steps and the house that gets northerly sun to plant it out next October .

post-1252-090047800 1304501183_thumb.jpg

Also have a kentiopsis oliviformis that has just started growing . Also a Velonia alba .

Given that i am the same Lattitude as chicago or New Hampshire will be interesting to see how these palms do long term. :mrlooney:

I have heard easy germination with fresh seed. Many people got seeds at the biennial, most had germination. The "deaths" happen when people try to speed them up!!

Interesting. Any idea why it does that?

Its certainly NOT a normal characteristic of this palm to have this appearance in the spear, we just corrected a palm that had a spear like this, when it opened it was as if it had been scrunched up like you do paper. We corrected it with trace elements and added zinc. It worked a treat, these NC Palms really Love fine crushed rock which is packed with all minerals they are used to growing in in their natural habit in NC. Our creek silt and fine crushed rock along with Nutricoat helps our palms Incredibly.

Dean, thanks for the photos of the Kentiopsis!

Is it my imagination, or do all New Caledonian palms seem to speed up growth once they get to about 4-5 ft tall?

Here is one of my Cyphophoenix elegans, I know, common compared to some of the beauties in this thread, but a good grower all the same!
