The New Caledonia collection...

Kostas

Thank you very much for your reply Bill! smilie.gif

Humidity is high in Pyrgos most of the time so some sun should be ok from what you say. I planted a 2 leaf Chambeyronia macrocarpa(Hookerii) in the ground in part day sun the past summer and it didnt burn at all although those leafs were grown indoors without any sun! That totally amazed me but it got defoliated from December's sudden frostsad.gif The spear is all green though and the leaf damage seems only superficial,on the upper surface of the leafs. Still, that effectively ruins the leafs...Hopefully it will recover...

Only about 4 years old???Thats great!!!!drool.gifHopefully i will see my seedlings starting to power this year! Your Actinokentia doesnt seems bigger than the rest so i guess its slower. My Actinokentia divaricata seedlings are growing their first leafs fast though!!!

Is your small Cyphosperma 4 year old or less or your large one(i am guess the smaller)? Mine might not have been 3 years old when bought then,it might have been only 1-2years old.

Thank you! It seems i forgot to mention my 9 Chambeyronia macrocarpa(Hookerii) which are growing fast and beautifully! They are only a year old and on their 4th leaf!!! Following my previous post,i checked out my Kentiopsis magnifica seeds and to my delight,i found 2 more germinators!!! These are 2 year old seeds and just a few months back did the first one germinate blink.gif

Cyphophoenix alba is one of my favorite New Caledonian palms so its great to hear it should be a good grower! When not kept too wet, mine grow problem free and produce new leafs at a good pace! It took me 2 seedlings though to find out what exactly they like and dont like...They have already developed the brown tomentum on their small crownshafts!

I look forward to being able to ground plant this beauty! They are so small(10-15cm) right now and have so thin leaflets that i am afraid to try any in the ground. Would you try it at that size or are they too delicate?

About the Lemurophoenix,i tend to categorize it along with the New Cal palms as well as they have so similar needs! I am growing mine just like my Chambeyronia and they all do well together! Same soil mix, same watering schedule, same likings!

So, Planted one this afternoon. Since several have reported problems growing them in the greenhouse, and Gary L. has had luck with his outside at a tiny stage, I opted to plant my Moratia cerifera this afternoon.

PLEASE wish me luck, prayers or touch wood. I'll accept all! :D

You have my prayers Bill. Have'nt made up my mind whether you're a stud or a fool. :mrlooney:

Is that planted in one of those gopher baskets they sell online? I went to the diggers website and wanted to buy some becaue making my own sucks and seems to cut up my hands, but I hesitated and wasn't sure which size to buy. Seems like you should plant everything in one of the 15 gal baskets, which size do you use and how do you like them?

First- Even with Rich's correction and now Kostas' I should say I planted my CYPHOKENTIA cerifera... :)

Yes Kostas, the small balansae is under 4 years.. I have to guess a bit as most came from Floribunda originally and things grow super fast there..so its an approximation on my part.

Also, on the C. alba, I didn't mention it, but it was all but a bare root planting... I had found a good sized on locally from JM and I thought it had been there a while as it was a pretty big 1 gal palm.. I went to plant it and pull it out of the pot and found it had a really good light mix with it, but probably had not been in it more than a couple months...most of the soil fell away. It has never looked back and is growing relatively fast considering how small it was.. I shaded it a bit due to its size, but some bright light or a few hours of sun would be fine now... may do it yet.

Bret- I'm sure that will become evident as the years go by...

Garth- I have only picked up the 5 gal size... any larger and I will probably go the box route...but thats just me. But Gary never sees any palms here because so many are "unplanted"...

PS- stay tuned... my C. houliou has opened its leaf, I'll post a pic in a few days or so... no pink or red, just slowly goes blue...

Nice, as always Bill! Aside from being difficult to come by & slow to grow, are the Cyphokentias difficult in SoCal?

I would venture most New Cal palms are a good grade happier on the coastal area than inland, thats all..... And as you mentioned, GETTING one.

Here's the only houliou I have that opens with any color. I have another about the same size & it's like Bill's, with only a slight pink hue.

Great stuff.

I think a few of these New Caledonians might make it way up here if they're in the right spot (obviously not looking anywhere near as good as Bills) .

WOW! Kudos to Len! Len, Jeff and I have a "contest" kinda going as to who has the biggest magnifica in So Cal... I have to throw in my entry in!!! :)

I WOULD have had trunk I think if I was brave enough to pull the old leaf base.... But I just looked and I see the tiniest amount of the pink powder in there, so I'm just WAITIN!

Is that really a Gaussia maya in that pic? I was just joking. Dang I'm good.

You wanna give me another Pseudophoenix to kill? OK> I've got an Orania full of mites with your name on it. Two can play at this game.

Are you offering me a Pseudophoenix or a Gaussia. Or are you offering me a Pseudophoenix and when I get there it'll actually be a Gaussia?

Wow, nice photos of all those wonderful New Caledonians. My collection took a hit a few years ago in the drought, losing several choice palms unfortunately. Apart from that, I agree, they are very rewarding palms to grow, although a little slow to start off...:mrlooney:

Bill, keep up the good work, and Len, show us some more photos of yours...

I don't have anywhere near the diversity of species as Pete does, or Bill, or Mike Green, but love them just the same! I have a few that are flowering or fruiting now, so all is good!

Here is one that survived...its siblings all perished due to poor soil and no water...this one was also lucky as a nearby Casuarina sheared off some huge branches that just clipped it..you can see the last couple of smashed leaves...

Burretiokentia vielliardii
