I wonder if the extra space dust will make things get colder.

If Betelgeuese went supernova and its 1300 light years away.... wouldnt it take 1300 years for us to see it ??

Or did it already happen 1300 light years ago ?????

The star is 1300 light years away. That means light from the star takes 1300 years to reach us - therefore whatever we see now (when you look out of your window) is the start as it was 1300 years ago.

Yeah, that star may have gone supernova some time ago, but, we're waiting for its light to reach us anytime. But, as any good old journalist, he wanted to make the article eye-catching to get you to read it. So, it could be 2012, or it could be 3547. But how many people would read "Supernova could be visible from Earth by 3547"?

We're long overdue for a cool supernova now. Well, that constellation is a wintertime constellation, so if that light brings any heat...

Ah the bastion of anti-science... There was also some nonsense about it raining down rare precious metals i.e. gold, silver on us post explosion The most precise telescopes in the world cannot measure when this star will go supernova, it could be in 2012 or it could be in a million yrs (relative drop in bucket of time) for a star. So for anyone to just come out say this will happen in any one yr is ridiculous – not impossible mind you but just very very very unlikely. Or being approx. 600+ light yrs away yes it could have happened already. When it does happen we could see the explosion for days, maybe wks, even during the day. But it won't be as bright as our full moon so no Tattooine-like sunsets, but it could cast a shadow, and should be brighter than Venus currently is in our sky. In any case it won't harm Earth, about 25 light yrs distance is our “danger zone”. Plus its not the kind of star that will expel gamma rays so no worries there. But if it does go boom next yr those alive in 2612 or thereabouts will have quite a show – or maybe just say the name 3 times in a row, that worked in the movie...

Ahhhh... the doomsday "Gamma Ray Burst" or GRB. You beat me to it. Though, a GRB strong enough to wipe away our atmosphere could happen at any time though.:winkie:
