Not a clue what this cultivar is called. Unusual coloring and leaf shape with this croton.

Any ideas?

The first one is my favorite, "Mosiac" (still has to color up some more). The second one is" Pinnochio" & the third is "Pride of Winterhaven". I'm not sure about the forth one.

How come some of the photos are so dark? Did you plant them in the shade or did you take photos at night? Mine are all in the full sun...

Well Jeff, I couldn't get away from all the pictures. The crotons are beautiful! Someone in my house is indifferent to crotons, :( but, I like them!

We have the the Royal Flush and two others, but I do not know the identity of those.

I really like many that you and Ron showed. For example:

Prince of Orange, Fishbone, Mammie, Thomas Edison and Pitcarin to name a few. Please tell me, how tall do you let them grow and what is air layering?

As you can tell, I'm a novice. Thanks for all the beautiful pics.

I like this one, it looks like a French Impressionist painting.

Wow! Do you or anyone know what this one is called? Very cool!

Hi Karolyn,

So you like crotons? :D Maybe that other "someone" can loosen up on the blinders and add some splash of color to the garden. :) So many times, our palm collections/gardens become "so green" that we forget to break it up and add a splash of color here and there.

An air layer is when you make a couple of cuts on a large stem on your plant, remove the outer bark and then wrap it with moist sphagnnum moss and aluminum foil. It's a little more than this, but that's the basics. Doing air layers is a way of starting with a much larger, rooted plant to pot up, instead of doing cuttings. But you need a large plant in order to do air layers.

Crotons are a group of plants that rarely exceed over 15' tall, and that would be a very old plant. Normally you see them in the 4-8' size. There are hundreds and hundreds of varieties, more like a few thousand worldwide. Dr. Frank Brown wrote the two good books on crotons. The first was published in the 60's ( a collector's book )and the last one with lots of good color pictures was published in the mid 90's.

Oh I've had the Nikon fired up quite a bit, but not for many palm and plant situations. The summer is always a lull for activity, unless your photographing the effects of cold damage.

This is the one I use as a hedge. It reminds me of paint droplets. The parts of the plant growing in complete shade produce nearly completely green leaves.

Even though around here crotons are regarded as slightly plebian things to have and are never named, I am still very partial to them. Black ones are my weakness. Either all black or black with red, yellow or pink spots or splashes. Black cordylines are another fetish I am afflicted with. Lost a lovely one not long ago. :( Thanks boys for all these photos, you may just have convinced me to expand my horizons in the colour dept.

We had a meeting scheduled in December but inclimate weather made us cancel. Our meetings are usually hosted at a private garden. Since the winter really hurt everybodies collections and/or gardens in general, no one wanted to have the gardens visited with so much cold damage.

In mid October we have a tentative scheduled meeting with auction in Boca Raton. I will send you a PM when details are finalized. smilie.gif
