Sunday, June 13 was the date for our most recent Northern Ca. Palm Society meeting and Richards place in Santa Cruz was the site. Just a few blocks from the beach, his place is an incredibly eclectic collection of many plant types with large specimen palms overlooking the garden. The front of the house features this beautiful Phoenix reclinata:

Hi Paul, I'm a remodeling contractor, and pretty accurate about house vintage. This home is at least 100 years, possibly 120, and is largely original inside. That's me with the hat in photo # 6 examining both garden and house!

As Dave would say....Glorious!

But it does look like he's got a nice collection of many types of plants there. Did the owner start all these palms from a very small size? Thanks for sharing....

Jeff

Jeff,

In his presentation, he mentioned often on the difficulty and cost of the cranes that were used to move many of the palms on to the property. I think the Caryota and some of the Kings were grown primarily on site but the large specimens were craned over his home on to the property. Others may remember more specifically than I do as I had ingested a few Pacifico clara prior to the talk.

Here are some photos of Mr. Josephson's other plants:

1. Ligularia 'Gold Edge'

post-608-12774072128467_thumb.jpg

2. Various plants with oversized leaves. The one near the top left corner is Gunnera killipiana. The top leaf surface is flat and glossy, very different from the common G. tinctoria

3. Flambouyant double poppies

post-608-12774072220806_thumb.jpg

4. The bonsai is a super-dwarf Wisteria and the big-leaf plant is Dendroseris litoralis

5. Agaves and other drought tolerant goodies inside the greenhouse
