Cold Beginning to 2010, but Moderation in site

Well the results for the first 3 months of 2010 are here. It's been real cold. So far I've lost only 2 palms: Phoenix rupicola and Ravenea rivularis. Neither is a big loss. More may die as we get into the season of rot when heat and humidity encourage composters to attack weakend palms. Hopefully it won't be an issue! Anyway, here's the note from the National Weather Service (sorry, temps are in F).

[i]... New record set for consecutive days below 80 degrees at the

Jacksonville International Airport...

... Still remains the coldest start to a calendar year in

Jacksonville climate history...

Today... Monday March 29th... Marks 104 consecutive days without

reaching 80 degrees here in Jacksonville Florida. The last time the

temperature reached 80 degrees was on December 15th, 2009. This

streak is now ranked first for the longest stretch of days without

reaching 80 degrees since records began at the Airport in 1948. The

top 5 consecutive day streaks without reaching 80 degrees at the

Airport are listed below...

104 days... Dec 16, 2009 through Mar 29, 2010

103 days... Nov 12, 1995 through Feb 22, 1996

103 days... Dec 1, 1977 through Mar 13, 1978

101 days... Nov 12, 1952 through Feb 20, 1953

97 days... Nov 30, 1957 through Mar 6, 1958

Forecast high temperatures are expected to reach close to 80 degrees

later this week on Thursday or Friday when the streak should come to

an end. The all-time record for consecutive days below 80 degrees

set in downtown Jacksonville... closer to the Atlantic Ocean... is 159

days set in the winter of 1884-1885.

This also Marks the latest in a calendar year (since January 1st) it

has yet to reach 80 degrees since records began at the Airport in

1948. The old record was set on March 14th in 1978. Inspecting

records from downtown Jacksonville prior to 1948 this is the latest

it has taken to reach 80 degrees since the late start of April 2nd

in 1941.

On a related climate note... through Sunday March 28th... the first 87

calendar days of this year is the coldest start to a New Year in

Jacksonville climate history going back through 1871. The average

temperature so far this year is 50.9 degrees... almost 6 degrees

below the normal average of 56.7 degrees through this date.

Land O Lakes FL, a suburb on the North Side of Tampa, FL

Summers are great, 90f/32c in the day & 70f/21c at night with plentiful rain & sun

Winters are subtropical with occasional frosts and freezes. Tropical cyclones happen.

We have a few Royal palms in the warm microclimates but Coconuts freeze.

Keith, That is amazing. I know Jacksonville, Florida has a tendency for lower high temperatures during the cooler months but that certainly sounds like a record.
