Howdyall:

Went to Descansco Gardens up in the rarefied enclave of La Canada Flintridge, which is a world-renowned Camellia garden, under a forest of California Live Oaks, Quercus acerfolius.

And, they were having a Camellia show there.

Of course, my first picture was a Vireya rhododendron.

I'm bringing this old PalmTalk thread back as a camellia question comes to mind.  If I prune back a Camelia Sasanqua to knee height in, say, January when it is done blooming, will it be able to bloom the following autumn/winter?  I raise this question because eventually this species of camellias will want to grow into a small tree.  However, I will want to keep it about 1.5 or 2 feet tall (30 to 50 cm).   I know that camellias can be pruned after blooming, but online sources don't discuss MASSIVE pruning back to a small size.  All those sources advise is NOT to prune a camellia any later than immediately after blooming is over.  If you wait any later, apparently the tree can't grow enough new wood for those branches to reach maturity in time for its blooming cycle.  This advice seems to be given online for all camellias without specifying how the sasanqua species might reactreact, specifically.

For example ---- At one point I was whacking down my Hibiscus rosa-sinensis shrubs down to a 30 or 40 cm in height.  The unfortunate consequence was that they never bloomed because they wanted to be a small tree, not a knee-height boundary planting.  Are camellias the same as hibiscus in this regard? (I.e they simply won't bloom if maintained at a height smaller than they were meant to be)

You advice is most welcome.  Thank you in advance!

Great question!

I know that some plants don't like being cut back hard. On the other hand, camellias take their sweet ever-loving time to get even to big bush, let alone small tree size. I've had several for years, and they haven't grown much, in the shadow of my palms, including Spanky the Giant Roystonea regia. (They have survived having fallen leaves land on them.) If your plants are small, I'd keep cutting them back and see what happens. If they're big already . . . maybe cut back and see? I haven't observed any big differences between japonicas and sasanquas, but my experience is very limited.

Interesting observation about the Hibiscus; I've butchered some big ones in my time and they usually came back and bloomed, though not right away.

Dave, I didn't look at the original posting date on this thread and I just about thought I lost my mind - Do camellias bloom in late summer in La Canada?! What kind of voodoo magic do they practice down there?! Then I saw this was from some time ago - March specifically!

I do love camellias, I have one large, old tree that somehow survived without irrigation when our house was on the market (prior to us moving in.) Four of its siblings of comparable size and age were dead by the time we moved in. This one survivor must have tapped into an underground water line or something. I should add more...

Camellias are pretty, indeed. But they struggle for me, mostly because of my palm excess.

I've seen a few around that are tree sized, particularly in places like Riverside and San Bernardino in some of the old 'hoods, there.
