Got back several days ago from a great week in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica.

To get from the international airport outside San Jose to Manuel Antonio (on the Pacific Coast), I rode in a large van over the mountains and snapped these photos on the way:

The van stopped by a bridge over a river so us tourists could see the crocodiles (alligators?).

We drove along the Pacific a bit, and then passed a lot of Oil Palm plantations.

I visited Jeff's place down there. He was a great host--thanks Jeff! We went out for meals several times and he drove me out to the meeting of the Costa Rica Palm Society, too. Made the trip much more interesting!

Here is the modest view from Jeff's place above the Bali House (and I do mean above--it is a really steep hill there!)

Here are his young Tahinas and some other young palms.

These are the last photos for tonight, but there are lots to follow!

Mark- Great pix!

You missed out seeing (and crossing) the old bridge. Check this thread started by Jeff in Costa Rica that he posted in 2007:

http://www.palmtalk.org/forum/index.php?showtopic=9054&pid=235551&st=0&#entry235551

The critters under the bridge in your posting and in mine in the thread above are American Crocodiles-same species that we have in South Florida.

The Crocs here don't get nearly as big as the ones in CR. Here, they're zone-pushing. Sorta like me and lots of others on these forums with our Palms etc. Our Crocodiles don't reach the sizes seen in the tropics.

Don't the crocs get really nice and big in the water expelled from Light's Turkey Point Nuclear Power Plant in Homestead, Fla? The water is super warm, so I don't think even this years prolonged cold changed the temp at all. (It did elsewhere though, 280 manatees have died, a bunch died in the Manatee river...)

Nice pics though, did you bring back a sprouted coconut?

Paul, Ned and Keith, thanks for the replies!

Not sorry I missed that picturesque old bridge.

Wish I could have brought back a sprouted coconut. Richard, the VP of the Costa Rica Palm Society, used to sell coconut seeds and is a real expert on the different varieties--he brought some 'Dwarf' and Pacific Tall palms to the CR palm society auction, and they went for next to nothing. Sure wish I could have brought those back.

The Bali House sits on a huge property, and has a long walkway down to the beach, where they have a private beach entry, shown in the photo with the gate.

You come out to a gorgeous beach--photos show views to the right, straight ahead and to the left.

You can see one of these coconuts has more upright fronds and the other has more droopy fronds. Jeff, tell me if I got this right: differentiating the varieties, the thickness of the trunk near the top was more of a differentiator between Pacific Tall and 'dwarf' varieties (which eventually also get tall). The Pacific Tall has a more uniformly thick and straight trunk, while the dwarf has a trunk that tapers towards the top and often bends more in search of light. Is that droopy-fronded one (last photo) a dwarf, and the upright-fronded one (3 pics this post and previous) a Pacific Tall?

Also of interest is resistance to lethal yellowing: Pacific Tall is about 50% resistant to LY, much better than Jamaica Tall, but less than the 90% or so resistance of the 'dwarf' variety. LY has not made it to Costa Rica yet, but it has made it as far as Honduras, so it will probably eventually get to Costa Rica.

(It's so cool getting to talk to local palm experts on a trip! :greenthumb: Hope I relayed all the info correctly, and I welcome any corrections.)

I stayed at the Hotel Costa Verde, which has fantastic views from higher up of this same beach area. Don (amazondk) stayed there too and has photos in this thread. What a great pool to hang out at!!!

The last view with the palms is from the table I ate breakfast at most mornings.

Time for a photo-break again; more to come later!

Yep, I saw a lot of hotels offering $20-$30 rates. There are youth hostels too, I think.

On to more photos!

I studied Spanish there for a week. It appears that there are 4 Spanish schools in town. Most of the students stay with families, which is very reasonable and also much better for your Spanish than hanging out by a hotel pool. So I had a half-study, half-vacation trip.

This school had some beautiful grounds, and we studied outdoors in these pavilions. I was worried it might be too hot for the brain to function well, but with an electric fan it was just fine.

This huge, beautiful, clumping bamboo was growing next to the school. Wish I could grow it here! Looks like Bambusa vulgaris 'Vittata', but I don't know what it actually is. I saw more of them planted around here, and they get huge.

Last year I was able to get my hands on a rare running bamboo that looks similar, Phyllostachys vivax 'Huangwenzhu inversa'. It's small and has been buried in snow for a few weeks--hope it survives OK.

The town nearby is Quepos. Between Quepos and the national park Manuel Antonio there is a 3-4 mile long narrow winding road, which now has many tourist hotels and restaurants. Because of the steep hills, there are lots of great views.

Here is an open-air market in Quepos and a harbor.

Talk about good timing--the Costa Rica Palm Society held a meeting outside Quepos while I was there!

What a great group of people! Very friendly, with simply a great depth of knowledge to share. The location and the people made it a wonderful day.

Here's a link to Jeff's group photo:

Here's a Heliconia growing in the garden, and then a wild passion vine and flower on the trail we followed along a small river. Alexander, who has farmed in the area for 35 years, told me you didn't want to plant that passion vine because of how invasively it grows there, and I got him in trouble by saying 'how could you resist', when it turns out that's how his wife feels, too.

Tropical-rain-foresty plants with waterfall in the background, sweaty-and-happy-he's-out-of-the-snow guy with waterfall in the background, and the actual waterfall (a different one from the previous pics):

Master of ceremonies at the palm auction. All these great palms at cheap prices that I couldn't bring home! Richard brought a number of coconut palms from selected seed of different varieties, and they went for next to nothing. :crying::drool:

I was told that you don't see unshredded banana leaves in most of the rest of the country--but here there's no strong wind so the banana leaves stay beautiful.

Hurricanes don't come this far south.

And the water in the river is the perfect temperature.

Everything's perfect!
