PSSC MARCH, 2010 MEETING

DoomsDave

Recommended Posts

Well, smack me upside my head with a frozen durian . . . .

I'm stoked and my anticipation is stroked because our March 20, 2010 Palm Society of Southern California meeting is going to be at two marvelous San Diego gardens, not far from the 5 Freeway.

GARDEN OF JIM WRIGHT

Ever wonder what it would be like to have Rhopalistylus, Hedyscepe, and Howeas for tall canopy, instead of the usual Archontophoenix? Ever cry yourself to sleep believing you will never see such a thing in your life, without paying a fortune in air fare for a trip to the South Pacific?

Well, put away your crying towel, bring your portable swooning chaise lounge and come to the meeting at Mr. Wright's garden!

Jim is a longtime member of our Society and began his garden in the early 1960’s. When he ran out of garden space, he bought the house next door for expanding the garden. He benefits from envy-inducing San Diego weather and has mature, towering, canopy-sized Rhopalostylis, Hedyscepe, Euterpe, Dypsis, rare Chamaedorea, Kentiopsis, and all sorts of other cool tropical plants, including a whole bunch of Epidendrum radicans orchids in a rainbow of colors growing outdoors. With the help and creativity of his now-deceased wife, Lise, the Wrights created a truly spectacular garden. Lise added the artistic touch to the garden and designed a lot of the plantings and mosaics in the adjacent garden, a true treasure and pleasure for the senses.

Lise and Jim had our screaming mob over for a meeting a few years back, and I can say: I came, I saw, I swooned. Rhopies with twenty feet of trunk. A 30 (three-oh!) foot tall Euterpe edulis which probably has produced some of the northernmost acai berries on earth. A totally bitchen boardwalk all through the place.

GARDEN OF LELAND FLETCHER

Very close to the Wright garden is the home of Leland Fletcher. Known by his nickname “Fletch”, he has a sloped backyard landscaped with rare palms and cycads. His garden offers near mature genera like Coccothrinax (8 species), Pritchardia, Dypsis, Pseudophoenix and others. His garden is 16 years old and very impressive. Fletch has many other hobbies to keep himself busy but cordially invited our group in for a tour. His wide driveway will be the site of our auction and raffle.

Note: No picking of fruits or seeds at either garden! :rage:

ITINERARY:

9:30 AM: Board Meeting at Jim Wright’s house

11:00 AM: Regular Meeting at the garden of Jim Wright

12:15 PM: Depart the garden of Jim Wright, get lunch on your own. At the north end of Burgener there are multiple fast food restaurants and a sit down buffet.

1:00 PM: Meet at the garden of Leland Fletcher. Auction and Plant Raffle

3:30PM: Adjournment of Meeting

DONATIONS OF PLANTS ARE TO BE BROUGHT TO FLETCH’S HOUSE

DIRECTIONS:

JIM WRIGHT’S GARDEN: 3151 BURGENER, S.D., CA (PHONE 619 2087272):

Take Freeway 5 to the Mission Bay area of San Diego (2 miles north of Fwy 8).

Exit Clairmont Drive east. Go one mile up the hill

Turn right on Burgener (at south end of shopping center).

Continue one mile south to 2151 Burgener. Enter garden through south gate

LELAND FLETCHER’S GARDEN: 2731 PENROSE ST, SD, CA (PHONE 619 2750161)

Return north on Burgener for a little less than a mile (before Clairmont Dr).

Turn left on Field St. Note that Field St. turns into Penrose St.

Fletch's house is on the left, 3731 Penrose St. The one with all the palms . . . . :D

Heres an Idea. We should try to get a group photo of all the attending Palm talk members at the Jubea grove down the hill from the gardens at Mission bay. (About 2-3 miles at most as the crow flies. )

That would be cool.

Anyone else game?

After talking with various folks, it looks like the best chance for the group photo op will be between the garden tours. It will work best to get to Jims yard early so we can peel off, get the pics, then lunch and to the next yard.

Its only a couple mile drive at most, I'll bring my big truck and maybe some others can bring similar, to haul mini groups there and back.

I'm gonna shoot for Jim's yard about 10:30-10:45 So maybe we can leave at 12:00 to get there (5+ min. drive) If anyone shows on their own, we'll be the easy nuts to see near the Jubea's :D
