Hey gang!  My buddy Ron took me to a couple of gardens today.  My camera only had enough juice to capture one.  This is a portion of Bob Hastings garden.  It's located on the west side of Dictionary Hill, east county's best kept secret.  His garden is 5 acres, located 9.5 miles from Downtown San Diego and includes a small footbridge over a ravine/wash that lets out down a huge canyon.  Super microclimate, and super soil.  The ground is mostly rock called meta-volcanic.  The strategy up here is to bring in lots of mulch and water a just a little bit, very frequently because of the superior drainage.  It's a cycad lovers dream; the heat of east county and the winter lows comparable to the coast (due to good cold drainage).  On with the tour!

A nice Cycad w/ cones!  There's lots of cycad pics.  I'm a cycad beginner so I don't know the I.D.'s.

Bottle palm, Hyaphorbe lagenecualis, has gone through 2 winters unscathed.  This gives you an idea of the microclimate here.

Matt, great tour! It's neat to see Cycads - something so new to me. Do the plants rely on natural water or does he have irrigation set up?

Scott, everything is irrigated.  Mostly by large rotary sprinklers like big Rainbirds.  All the cycads caudexes were white with the residue of Daconil to prevent rot.

awesome photos! Do you know if thats a heterospathe in the last photo with the view in the background? Those cycads are awesome too. Does he do anything for theft protection? I've never seen a Euterpe edulis before with almost upright leaves too as opposed to drooping. Is that normal in SoCal?

I'm always up for learning new things!
