Got down to 45F last night. Lost one fond each on 3 Veitchias along with 2 queen palm fronds. A sickly queen palm down the street came down (that was probably for the better). 2/3 of the leaves on a large brugmansia went bye bye (this happens almost every storm we get, though). Ficus Lyrata leaves are so big, there are always a bunch of those laying around. African Tulip tree shed some leaves for sure. I feel fortunate.....it was an angry storm.

Wind damage can be just as bad. Most of my trees are fairly well protected. What concerns me is the cold. It is sunny but only in the mid 50's & just light wind. Tonight will be the worse I'm afraid.

The Veitchias are out in the open, so if any palms would get damaged, those would be the ones. NWS predicting 39 tonight for moi.

I got down to 29f, but it must have been brief because the grass was not frosted, and the dog dish had no ice.... don't see any damage. I brought in some potted tender tropicals and the ficus dammaropsis for the night tonight....

Interstingly, the wind was not that bad around here....

Went outside at the crack of dawn this morning, and it was 37.5 F, low, but not dangerous, not even any ice in the wheelbarrow of water.

False alarms are MUCH better than real ones, though, it remains to be seen if we're going to warm up at all . . . .

Hope so.

Evidently the cold air that settled in behind the front yesterday was modified as heights rose along w/ dew points & some scattered high clouds. NWS_SD stayed with their original forecast but NWS_LA issued a "freeze warning" for at least the San Fernando valley earlier in the evening then had to reverse course when temps didn't drop. Never-the-less, it was cold & after the rain, the wet soil was very uncomfortable for tender palms.

All the forecasts I checked called for high 40s, which is what I had: low of 47.7F. That's the good news. The bad news is the daytime temps won't go above mid 50s.

Yesterday (12/8) we had a high of 44F. This morning we hit 28, 2 degrees warmer than yesterday.

45F\ 7.2C this morning but there have been 5 straight days of below 60F\ 15.5C maximums [Dec. norm: 70F\ 21.1C]. The toll on some palms is beginning to be evident  More rainfall this weekend.

Yesterday was one of those gloomy cloud covered days in Walnut Creek. The sun never came out and the temp. never got above 45F. The system that moved through here was a tease with light rain or drizzle off and on most of the day. A much stronger system is supposed to arrive in N. Calif. around noon today with a forcast of 100% rain.

45F right now with rain in the forecast....and no sun, no chance of sun, the sun has disappeared.

Very dreary with all of th damage so far. 1 of my B. sp. 'Windowpane' is showing damage, the other 2 I'm certain will follow. B. alfredii show nothing yet, nor do the madgascariensis..

This winter is not starting out well for me.

Should be warmer up in Bay Area as cold airmass is ushered out by westerlies. Very moist air over SoCal w/ showers is really helping the rain deficit. Already over 2 inches since Thursday & heavy showers tonight!

my low temperature in south tijuana for this winter is 8.4 C / 47.1 F, but i have this temperature or close in 3 nights.

what i dont like of this winter is the cool days we have in this last week in the day. this is not good for the tropical palms.

in the big storm of last monday, i have one wind of 110 kilometers / 68 miles per hour at 5 pm, and we have much damage in some areas of tijuana from this storm.

to me the most worse weather of winter in this area is always 10 december - 15 january.

TEMP. JAN. 21/10 C (69/50 F), AUG. 29/20 C (84/68 F). COASTAL DESERT, MOST DAYS MILD OR WARM, SUNNY AND DRY. YEARLY PRECIPITATION: 210 MM (8.2 INCHES). ZONE 11 NO FREEZES CLOSE TO THE OCEAN.
