Garden Tour of our Yard

Jeff Searle

Recommended Posts

A few people have been asking to see some palms of our yard. We had some damage fom the hurricane that took it's toll on many of the palms and plants through-out our yard. Hope you enjoy it as much as we do. Our house is now 5 1/2 years old.

Up-close showing a flower spike. Even though this palm got large, I think the hurricane played a role in causing this to come into flower.

Jeff - WOW. What a place for all the palms to live in! How big was that Arenga pinnata when it was planted.

And by your post I assume it's monocarpic?

Nice digs Jeff.  How do you go about choosing which palms to plant from your extensive inventory?

This is a cross between Hyophorbe lagenicaulis and H. verschaffeltii. It's been a very fast grower. I originally got this as a small plant in Thailand and brought it back.

A grouping of Polyalthea trees on the street. I collected many seed about 4 weeks ago and are now already starting to germinate. This tree is still quite un-common in the landscape here in S. Florida.

Jeff,

What a garden!!! What I like about it too, you seemed to have other stuff other than palms, which I am trying to do with my garden now.

When you say your house is 5 1/2 years, does it mean the garden too? How big were the palms when you planted them? Something to look forward to in 5 1/2 years :).

BTW, I have those Hyophorbe lagenicaulis and H. verschaffeltii crosses too... Good to be able to see what they might turn out in a few years.

Thank you for the photos..... Really something to inspire me with young garden :)

Regards, Ari :)

Ari,

My house is 5 1/2 years old, therefore my garden is that age or less. But yes, alot of palms were good size when I planted them. Meaning, on average alot of 7,10,15 gallon size. Alot of palms were anywhere from 2-3' tall to maybe 6-7' tall. The sabal palmettos were large already. Many or most palms have done very well. And like all gardens, there are always a few palms that struggle. Usually they were planted in the wrong spot.

That Encephalartos will eventually get as large as a good-sized palm tree.  Not sure you'll be alive then though '-)  Where in the world did you get that one?  They are one of the largest (if not THE largest of cycads).

Wonderful garden Jeff.

Very nice garden Jeff.

Thanks for giving me an idea of Arenga pinnata and Caryota no grown up palms in cultivation. I have small seedlings of both of these monsters and still couldn't decide about a good place in the ground to plant them in the future, considering their look and dimensions.

Jeff, it's beautiful.   And what a collection!!   Love the various combinations and the layout - gorgeous - the essence of a tropical garden.

The lagenicaulis x verschaffeltii is really nice - it seems to combine the classic "spindle-shape" of the trunk and crownshaft with the very stylistic fronds of the bottle.  What a palm!  Any idea how tall it will get?  Would be nice if it stayed a bit shorter than the spindle (some of which seem to get a "stretched-out" look when they're tall) - just my op tho.

Jeff, I'm amazed! And the variety, lushness, spread of it all. Wow! I'm gonna have to borrow Dave's swooning couch! It looks like a resort! Wow! Have you ever hosted on of your local palm chapeters meetings? It's like a destination in itself.

Jeff,

Now, I am the one confused... I know you probably have gone through this before, but, what is the conversion for 7, 10, 15 gallon size? I am hopeless with imperial system. Metric for me anyday :).
