Palmə häl′ik

The 2009 growing season's about to come to a end here in the big city of Brandon, FL. I've pretty much gotten all of my goodies into the ground, and am leaving it up to the palm gods to handle it... :innocent:

I'll do what I can, but it's all up to mother nature now...

I just thought I'd like a thread to look back on my plantings, and compare results as time goes on...

I reckon I'll start with my front yard which has dense oak canopy...

Everything here gets about 3hrs full sun, and the rest of the days is filtered bright light...

This H. verschaffeltii was originally planted out back just before winter last year with a H. lagenicaulis. The Bottle didn't make it, and I decided to bring the Spindle out front to give it canopy... It's slowly making it's way back... They were both 25gal...

The Royal here was planted Spring '09 as a 15gal.

The Chambeyronia macrocarpa var. hookeri was also planted Spring '09 as a 15gal.

Here's the other side of the driveway...

I wasn't going to put anything here at first, because my boat was here, I've since gotten a storage shed, so I've got a little more room in the yard... The trailer goes back to the storage place too... I've been using it all week to haul junk to the dump...

This'll give me a fresh 20x10 slate for next Spring!

These three Royals were planted last week from 7gal.

This is the shadiest spot on my property. Under thick water oak canopy and cornered in...

Zero direct light gets here.

Balaka microcarpa, Basselina gracilis, Cyphophoenix nucele all reside here... Along w/ a few orchids and epiphytes...

Summer '09

This wraps up the front yard, I'll move to the sides and backyard soon... I'm spent on uploading...

Thanks for stoppin' in...

I can't wait to see how all those new palms look at the end of next summer. That's quite a collection for Brandon. One would think the only palm that grows there is a queen palm. Your plants look healthy and I would definitely try Roystonea  if I lived anywhere from Orlando south.

Water oaks are yucky! I bet it's fun hacking through those oak roots that are like railroad ties every time you plant a palm!

I've seen a fully mature coconut palm in front of a restaurant (I think) that is right next to a Lowes not far from where you live. I'm sure you know which one I'm talking about. I was amazed that a coconut could grow to that size in Brandon. I guess the heat island of being right in the middle of a big city and surrounded by black asphalt helps keep the frost away.

Yep. It's in front of BoneFish Grill on Lumsden.

There's also coconuts on CR579 in Seffner...

I guess it's all about the microclimates...

Neat. I didn't see any alfredii pics, have you planted it yet? I found this picture and I really like the way they look when adults. I suspect if planted on it's side, with a little planning, they could be made to grow a curved trunk like a coconut.

Yeah Keith. It's out back.

Burned it though.

I threw it in full sun.

Every leaf is burned except the new emerging one... :crying:

It's had a rough few weeks... Not to mention the fertilizer blast it rec'd...

That's weird, these are supposed to be good in sun, and it was growing in mostly full sun before... Maybe it was the fertilizer?

Here ya go...

Full Sun is 8+ hrs to me...

Yeah, it was probably a combination of both that fried it...

I'm sure it'll pull through...

Here it is, in all it's glory:

I planted this 7gal Royal in front of them (H. indica's), last week. It ought to give 'em the filtered light they want...
