Christian,

You obviously havn't been to Ralph Velez' place!! :)  Ralph is the master of squeezing in an incredible amount of palms in a very limited area.

And I hope we're going to see many more photos... It's been a couple of years since I was there myself. Any photos of the Bismarckia at the end of the cul-de-sac? I sold that to Ralph in 1994 and I hope it's still  thriving!!

If I heard Ralph right when he started the group tour:

He started/built the house in 1962, it was a dirty muddy lot back then.

I think I heard his lot is 60'x 100'--- NOT BIG--but full!!

Bo- several of us "missed" the Bismarkia at first because" the crown" was twenty feet in the air!!!  the trunks look a little common when at that height.  :)

Two of my favorites...a small but healthy/happy Chamberonia Lepidota

and Crysophila Albida (rootspine palm) with 20'  YES 20 FEET (thats 6-7 meters) of trunk. Awesome!!

Great time was had by all today I think..Great and exciting lunch trip too....I think I can get some extra Ranch hands at the "Galaxy Cafe" if needed....but no food ? ???

I'll post some pics too......when I develop them!!! lol

All I can say is Ralphs place is one of the most awesome gardens I have seen in cali.! I would look at areas I had already seen and see half a dozen palms that I had'nt seen the first time around. It was especially good to see palms thriving planted so close together on a small city sized lot. I'll never worry about over planting again! Also it was great to see so many palm freaks from the board turnout. I saw B.S. man about palms, Bob, paul, and Matty B.,palmazon, Steve from So Cal., Matt from San Diego and La Habra Dave in rare form in his red Converse. He brought his extra heavy duty mobile swooning couch but it shattered from the palm overload :D ! And yes lunch was an adventure as we traveled from the bingo hall/cafe that did'nt serve food straight into the hood but ended up at a very nice joint that definately had prospective ranch hands :P !A great day and a great time had by all. Steve

Urban Rainforest Palms,Cycads and Exotics. Were in San Diego Ca. about 5 miles from the beach on Tecolote canyon. It seems to be an ideal growing climate with moderate temps. and very little frost. Vacation Rental in Leilani Estates, big island Hi PM me if interested in staying there.

I did learn something at this meeting:

I overheard one of the docent type tour guides giving the recipe used for soil amendment(this caught my interest, and I listened with glee, thinking that I too, would now hold the secret)....

One third native soil

One third sand

Two thirds organic material

THAT WAS IT !!!!! The ingredient I had been overlooking all these years !!! The fourth third....how could I have been so blind ???

(I'm sure he was just nervous, but I couldn't resist)

Dear Steve  :)

beautiful pictures of our loved Ones(Palms).

i feel that those of you who attended the meeting.

and had ample glance & chance to touch & feel those

lovely palms as seen in your stills.i consider them lucky.

in those pictures the plam that swept me away

was the Bailey Sp.

the photos appear that this meeting had a huge

attendence.and i see people really relaxing.

this is a must for all, especially for those having

very tight schedule in life.

Now in asia, people do not have time for leisure to

persue gardening, listening to music, self cooking etc..

all software proffessional are busy making money &

do not have time to relax.

but when they retire with a heavy purse & a bald or

grey haired head.it would be very late to make a U turn

in life. what is missed is missed for life ?

Iam saying this because my younger brother work for

a reputed software firm.and he does not have time to

spend with me,my.mom & dad.he has become machenical.

i have talked about this with him but no use.

Dear guys i feel that money is necessary for a comfortable

life.but it should not dictate as to how we should lead our

life !

Love,

Kris.

love conquers all..

Ralph Velez is too modest to mention it, but his garden was featured in a book , "A Man's Garden" by Warren Schultz, published in 2001 by Houghton Mifflin Company.  This book describes 14 wildly different gardens that are distinctly male.  It's a great read!
