When Woodyetias get that fat I've mistaken them for Royals!  Flowering too!  I haven't seen that!

Bob,

Great pics. I hope my royals get that big. I'm heading to San Diego tomorrow and will stop and take a close look at these guys.

You guys should check out South Coast Plaza in the OC.  There are Royals galore everywhere.  The specimans are huuuge.  There are also many fully grown Howeas, Caryotas and Rhopalostylis baueri palms too.  Hehehe... I hate shopping at the mall but I don't mind going to South Coast Plaza so I can check out the palms inside and outside. :D

the famous Saddleback Eye Center - the first object you lay eyes on after laser surgery is a palm tree

I've pilfered Howea seed from there - looks like I'll be getting some Wodyetia too

I get by with a little help from my fronds

Bob, It's refreshing to see such a nice selection of palms at a commercial site. I'm a landscaper in Del Mar and the trend is to plant the same old same old. The resort I maintain did'nt have one palm tree when I started there and now it has dozens including Chambeyronia, Clinostigma, Rhopalostylis, groves of Howea and more. People love em. I have a Coconut planted in a similar way to that Wodyetia at the resort also. It's planted on a south facing slope, with black weed fabric layed around it to keep out excess water in the winter, black stones from the beach around it to heat the ground and it's near a two story building for wind protection and reflective heat. So far so good as it will be going into it's 5th winter. I'll try to take some pics once I get my computer issues resolved. Steve

Urban Rainforest Palms,Cycads and Exotics. Were in San Diego Ca. about 5 miles from the beach on Tecolote canyon. It seems to be an ideal growing climate with moderate temps. and very little frost. Vacation Rental in Leilani Estates, big island Hi PM me if interested in staying there.

If I'm not mistaken, I there are some nice triple A. purpureas along the right side of the of the eye center; along the road that goes back to the court house.
