Hi Matt,

I dont know the temps ...Maybe Darold will chime in. I was lucky enough to catch a couple of days of sunshine (72F! a heat wave!)...previously he'd been in overcast and fog for weeks. SF is really more like a coastal island...the marine influence is very complete. No frost, no heat.

I didnt get a shot of the Parajubaea from a distance...only this one for scale...of the trunk.

Wow, thanks for the photos. Geonoma undata is a spectacular palm that rivals C. renda for color.

And it grows in cooler climates - what a great palm!

Darold has an amazing garden. I live about 1 mile from him and my lows this past winter were 31 on shaded stone patio. I think my planting area was 2 to 3 degrees warmer.

Matt... My normal winter low temperatures are about 1-2C (34-36F). The last freeze was in 1998 when the temp dropped to -2C (28F). I have had no frost since then, and the freeze in January, 2007 did not affect my garden. My house is rather shabby looking right now, will re-paint in September, and then will post better pictures of my adult Parajubaea cocoides.

Jeff...My plant of Geonoma undata has never experienced frost. I purchased three 1-gallon plants fron Dick Endt in Auckland in year 2000 and planted the one shown on June 28, 2001. (My 50th birthday!) You and anyone else are welcome to visit anytime!

Peter...This cloud forest palm has experienced only a few hot days, the worst was one day at 29C (85F). The temperature is almost never over 18C (65F). This palm is 12cm (4.5 inch) in diameter and now has 76cm (30 inches) of trunk below the leafbases.

I'm signing off now for a couple weeks of vacation but will leave you with one more eye candy shot from my garden. I grew this Rhopalostylis sapida from seed collected by Dick Endt at Wreck Bay on Great Barrier Island, seed collection was in May, 1989.

Amazing! I'm sooo sad that I lost my Geonoma undata last year! For it's first few years, sitting on my patio, it saw temps in the low 30's (31F, 33F). But keep in mind it was on the patio so I'm sure it was at least 5 degrees warmer. It didn't seem to mind the cold as long as it was protected and in shade.
