What does everyone use on this forum? What are the opinions?

I gave up on them years ago (cheap HD Ryobi or something like that) --- but I have a bad infestation of air yams on the frontier of my garden so need to buy one.

Best regards

Ed

I like the cheap electric ones the best, though they can be a pain with the power cord.

Why? You can get them 10 bucks at yard sales and Salvation Army stores, just plug in and away you go. None of the nonsense in dealing with those pain in the ass gasoline engines. Any brand'll do . . . .

I have a Stihl handle bar weed wacker and it will cut down small trees. It has a 40cc engine and it is awesome if you have to do heavy duty weed wacking.

I bought some discounted Echo gas trimmers from the Depot years ago and still use them OCCASIONALLY :P

Zone 10a at best after 2007 AND 2013, on SW facing hill, 1 1/2 miles from coast in Oceanside, CA. 30-98 degrees, and 45-80deg. about 95% of the time.

I ended up purchasing the John Deere XT170LE. A bit smaller at 32.6cc, but it's somewhat lightweight and has all the attachements available that I was interested in (pole saw, mini tiller, hedge trimmer)

I wouldn't say it's the best (Stihl makes the best, IMO) but for my residential usage it fits the bill.

Wanted the stihl kombisystem. Got the echo multitool instead with the smaller engine mostly due to the cost. I've had it for 5 years and use the hell out of it. In addition to the weed wacker attachement, I also have the hedge trimmer attachment and the pole chainsaw attachment. I've been happy with it. I think it was about $100 cheaper than the equivalent stihl at the time. I might opt for the bigger engine in the future because I use the chainsaw attachment quite a bit and more power would be nice.

It should run you a little over between $350 - $425 out the door with the weed wacker attachment.

You may want to look at stihl because they have come down in price. You can get a more powerful motor for about the same price as the echo.

Here is a link to a gainesville dealer.

Also, you can find good deals on ebay, especially for the attachments.

Most likely not, alas, but I've got to get to Florida again. Or if not, come here, and visit! Riot control in my garden!

I have a Tory from Home Depot with the brush cutter attachment. I could never get the darned string trimmer to work right. It was always breaking and then I would have to stop and fix it. So I just bought the brush cutter and use it all the time. We have about 1500 feet of fence line to do and some heavy brush on the canal bank. I will but the pole saw attachment this year so I can ge tthe high branches on the palms that need to come down after they turn brown. And the huge influoresnce on the queen behind the barn. The Troy has been serviceable for about 5 years now.

Whatever kind of trimmer you get, I'd recommend loading it up with a star cross section style line. It kicks butt.

Matty, most definitely, this type of line works a treat, especially when you combine it with a Shindaiwa 'Speed Feed' head. I bought a 50cc Kawasaki a few months ago, fitted the speed feed head and loaded it with pink star line and have never looked back. With this combo you don't even need a blade for the tough stuff.
