Who wants to go to the SD Zoo on Wednesday??

kylecawazafla

Recommended Posts

I'm embarking on a cross country road trip with my dad tomorrow morning and am hoping to be dropped off at Balboa Park while my dad visits some friends in La Jolla. Anyways, I want to see ALL the palms and tropical trees in the park, so I'll probably have to walk/run fast. So anyways, if anyone is free on Wednesday (probably around noon, but it's hard to plan a road trip so precisely) and would like to meet up, let me know!! I am planning on going to the Kendall Frost Marsh Preserve to see if there are any Avicennia marina var. resinifera remaining after they eradicated them, and then I want to go to Catamaran Resort, but I want to spend most of my time at the SD Zoo and the rest of Balboa Park. Send me a PM if you're interested and I can give you my cell phone number and you can call or text it.

I'm always up for learning new things!

This afternoon I found the usual suspects hanging out by the Cocos nucifera with the other reptiles at the zoo.

Matt soothes the wild Pritchardia with whispers and strokes while Kyle and Paul observe the technique:

Kyle is very interested in flowering trees and ficus and the zoo is loaded with them, but many are not labeled. Even so, he managed to ID most of them.

Great thread folks...

Those pictures made me miss my flash visit to SD Zoo a couple years ago. Too bad MattyB didn't show us most of the incredible cycads they have all over the place...I've actually heard that many of them came from Jungle Music's marvelous collection a few years ago. The Caryota gigas are also awesome...

I'm glad Kyle is back to those great palm related activities with his camera. I remember back some 5 or 6 years ago when we were all palm newbies here, and 15 yo Kyle rode a bike or a scooter with his camera in SoCal and showed us many species in cultivation from lovely private gardens he passed by. That was a classic thread...

Are you all 4 of you planning to attend the Biennial in Rio next year? I know Kim is probably coming, with her nice top quality camera...

With Ryan Palmarum and Robert Rainforest around, I guess there'll be a tough competition for the best pictorial report... :winkie:
