Wow, I am impressed by the Bismarkia seedling! Did you put it in a big pot?

Show more pics soon !

What is the soil? it seems to be a kind of coconut fiber?

Kindest regards,

Philippe

Phillipe, Depending on the zone here in Florida they usually go in the ground around the 3 gallon stage. Photos of some 3s. 1 year after in the ground next to some Coconuts the same size.

Philippe,

Thank you!

That pot is the biggest I have ever used for palm seedling :)

That is the "Palm soil" about which I was talking.

I wish we can find this Palmsoil in Switzerland

In Sri lanka we use coconut "dust" called "Kohubath" but I'm not sure I fill my suitcase with that next time way back!

Okay, I finally took some new shots of my seedlings. These are all currently at my office, as I don't trust them outside unprotected and as can be seen from the photos they can't be trusted inside my house because there is a cat that thinks they are his personnal salad bar. (post 1 of 2)

cam00029g.jpg

C.costaricana - back from the brink of death. (a gift from Australia! as all my Chams are)

cam00030w.jpg

C.glaucifolia - also rescued from the cat, but a bit better off than its neighbors

cam00031v.jpg

This is a mishmash of plants, "Walmart special" brom in the front (pups are taking over), Mangrove to the left, Seagrape with philodendron top left, bigger phil top right and mid right is a batch of random fan-leaf palms(?) I picked up seed off the ground in Florida last year.

Post 2 of 2:

cam00034b.jpg

C.cataractarum - by far the best recovery from Cat-zilla, I am watching this one with much pleasure.

cam00035o.jpg

Vietchia? - some of my oldest seedlings, pushing 3 years old now, also collected from the ground in Florida. I'm open to an ID interpretation here, I can post more pics of the finer details of this one if it helps. Big red fruits that had tapered seeds about as big around as a nickel inside. Good germinators.

cam00036i.jpg

A.merrillii(?) - another cat rescue, this sad little christmas palm(?) was another random seed collection from Florida. Small phil for company.

Bonus round:

cam00037z.jpg

"Zebrina" blood-leaf banana - not at all appreciative of fluorescent lighting or air conditioning. This one is going in the window this week for some well-deserved sun.

I've got more at home, but they all look like crap. The ones that actually are starting to look good are store-bought and long past being called seedlings.

Sorry if I ask you Eric J: Which language is "Ph'nglui mglw'napalma Funkthulhu R'Omahaea wgah'nagl fhtagn"

mama sinhala tikak puluwam nammut mama obe katakaranawa understand ne? Kohide inne?

and do you have good recipies for the cat? with thyme and tomato....long time cooking low temperature....

But you have a nice palm friendly office. Will you plant enjoy the garden soon or do they stay indoor-palms?

Your palm on pic ...035 looks like a baby Veitchia joannis if I see the brown marks on the petioles

Best wishes for your seedlings!

Philippe,

It is "Cthulhu-ese", a made up language from my favorite author, H.P. Lovecraft.

As for the cat, he's not mine to cook, and I'd not soon live down the repercussions of such dining.

As for the palms, yes, it does have brown on it, I can post a close-up later when I return home.

Unfortunatly for these plants they'll have to stay potted forever even if they can spend some time outside over the summer, I'm in zone 5b here and nothing palm-like can survive our winters.

I am very sorry: before replying I didn't know where Omaha can be! For a french it sounds like a Normandy beach!
Now I can imagine Nebraska being very cold in winter, it's far inside the american continent!

So you have to enjoy the tropics inside you office (so do I with Hyophorbe verschaffeltii and Bismarckia in my office) or travel... to Hawaii?

BTW I am mostly vegetarian!

Took this photo last week in the greenhouse. Hardly anything. I will post a new photo tomorrow. Things are sprouting like crazy.
