Cold weather coming again to Florida?

Looks like we may see some more 30's come Wednesday! They're calling for around 45* for Tampa and We usually see 10* lower (give or take) where I'm at, here in Polk County. I thought winter was all finished up since we've already seen a couple of 90's and a lot of mid / upper 80's!

I'm not even expecting 40's here. They are overblowing this one big time.

Our local weather guru said we could get record breaking cold, as low as 32F on Tuesday noght. But weather.com still says 38 will be the lowest

Looks like we are gonna get a little to. Upper 40s tonight, then 38 tomorrow night, then back to the upper 40s. Then spring comes back again.

Both local channels here in Jacksonville say mid to lower 30's for Tuesday and Wednesday but Weather.com says upper 30's for Tuesday and low 40's for Wednesday.

The observation I've made over the last 3 years is the winters have gotten progressively colder and longer in Jacksonville, at least in my area of town. I'm really starting to think we're skirting zone 8b status.

It looks like our Ft. Lauderdale record is 48 F. If we do 44 F., like they say, we'll be inscribed into the record books for modern "eternity."

There's no way it's going down to 44 in Ft. Lauderdale, what are they thinking?! Our forcast lowest temp here in Orlando is 41-43.

I called the National Weather Service in Miami, and they said "yes" it will be that cold (41-45 F.) as the dew point will be in the high teens, so this air is of high Arctic origin. The event will be a two-nighter with Wed. AM being 47-51 F.)

That temperature range won't do too much adversely, I'd suppose; I'll just wrap (again!!) the four breadfruit trees, that are really starting to become a Royal "p-in-t-neck!")

We'l just have to see if they are fairly close on this one. The local NWS office got the other two chill events (in Jan-Feb) exactly as forecasted, so who knows?

It's pretty certain, that we'll probably not see under 50 F. after this week, though (until after Nov.5-10, 2009.)

Late.

Here in Atlanta, the forcast is calling for around 32F tomorrow morning, and 29F on Wednesday morning. This will definitely be a shock to the system after temps of nearly 80F this weekend.

I think, Steve, that your record low these next three mornings is 28 F. (at Hartsfield) so a record or two should be challenged. This could be a problem for upstate S.C.'s peach crop!

I just checked the NWS Miami website and clicked in and around the Ft Lauderdale area. I saw nothing less than 51-52F for the entire area. The sun is too high in the sky now for any cold air mass to have a significant punch. Add 3-5 degrees to whatever the forecast models are saying.

b]Well, that is indeed good news, Ray; I think that I'll still wrap up my breadfruit trees (just in case,) as they hate anything below 58F., being "ultra-tropical."

Thanks for sharing that latest report, as I was getting a bit uncomfortable with what I was going to see by Thursday! Whew!! That should be our kast northern "blast" I'd imagine!

I fully agree on what Ray is saying it might be cooling down for a certain day its not out of the

normal I went back 8 years in my area on wunderground what i found was neat some data i question but

here's some data

april 2008

there where total of 5 days in the 50's

4 days was in the mid 50's

1 day in the lower 50's

April 2007

total days 7 days in the 50's

5 days in the mid 50's

2 days in the lower 50's

It rare to get in the mid 40's in april but it does indeed happen like in 2000 after all each april is different and so are the seasons just wish we can make a machine that controlls cold spells :mrlooney:

Looks like we are right on target here in Louisiana to hit 38 tonight, which will tie our all time record low for this date, established in 1971.

They're way off, at least here. I'm still 52F at 10pm...and as I think most plant-growers know, good solid guidance is that 40-45F at 10pm is potential freeze material, and that's in January. Nights are short, the sun is high in the sky, winds are still up, and climatology has the record low at the airport (in the countryside in a cold-pocket way outside of town) at 32F, also in 1971 (as per Keith's notation in his area). Record lows for surrounding dates are in the 33-34F range generally. The strange thing is that the NWS has seemed rather nonchalant in pushing this forecast, in their discussions they don't really mention mitigating factors (saturated, warm ground, climatology, etc.). Really strange. Today's high was about 62F, roughly 6F higher than the NWS had forecast for today. I'm guessing the major models are very poor at predicting cold-spells in springtime, and the weather people buy it hook, line and sinker without really thinking...

NWS and weather.com both were right on the money here in Houston. They predicted 37 and t bottomed out at 37.6 in my yard with very light frost just on the open grass areas. I believe this will set a new record low for this day.

It bottomed out at 41.6 here...and only 36 at our notoriously cold airport. NWS had forecast 32. Looking at the Unisys low-temp plot for the entire southeast (LA across to SC & FL), I can't find one freezing temperature recorded for this a.m., though there are two 32s up in Arkansas. Oops! But aren't we all happy for their gaff. Hopefully things will stay warm tonight for everybody as well.

Paul

Paul,

I didn't think of the peach crop. A freeze would most certainly not be good for that. Our latest prediction for tomorrow morning on weather.com is 28F. The record low they have published for my town is 29F on April 8. The record low for the month of April is 24F. So we may very well be flirting with record lows.

This morning wasn't as bad as expected. It was pretty windy, so there was no frost. The water cup I left in the console of my car didn't freeze over at all. I didn't get a chance to check my weather station this morning before I left for work, but on weather.com it showed we only got down to 38F. The National Weather Service showed a low of 36F at an airport about 15 miles from my house.

I'm 99.9% sure we won't see any actual freeze damage here in central Florida, but I'm just sick of the cold weather and feel like it may set some plants back a bit due to the shock going from 90's last week down to a possible high 30's this week! Judging from this mornings temps... I know we will see at least low 40's if not squeeze out a very high 30, not to mention that we are seeing 40+ mph wind gusts right now!

I agree with you, Jay; this DOES set the plants back, it has got to. I am so uncomfortable today. I just cannot get my body warmed up. We peaked at 72 F. but with Wind Chill Index, it felt like maybe 60 F.
