Ficus benghalensis

Hi all

I have a Ficus benghalensis that was given as a gift, should I plant this monster? If I do how long will it take before it gets really huge? How long will it take before its the size of a large Delonix regia for example? I have an area of about 500m2 at bottom of my garden along a river, the banyan might help to control flooding too.

Let me know what you all think

Plant that monster soon to be, in a 25gal clay pot and call it a day. Build a berm to control your flooding and plant on top of that. unless your willing to control that banyan with a chainsaw.

If you have the room, go for it.  Anything smaller than approximately 4000 sq. meters (1 acre) is too small.

Hi Guys

Thanks.

I think I will put it in a big pot for now.....or trade it for a palm or two. It could spread to it hearts desire down at the river but I still want to plant other plants around there!

Thanks again

  • 3 weeks later...

Just last week I took some cuttings from a local Ficus benghalensis tree in hopes of starting a tree. I have the property for one of them at least. Ficus benghalensis and a few other species are very fast growers in my area. I have a Ficus altissima (variegated leafed type) and it's grown to 30 feet tall in 5-1/2 years after it had been completely frozen down to its roots.

About one mile from me are five large Ficus benghalensis. The folks that own the property they are on are buiding a new home in the midst of them. Here's a photo of the home, which isn't finished yet. You can see one of the ficus trees next to the home:
