Now let's step into the heated and constantly misted greenhouse behind Ralph's garage. This is where the most tender plants are coddled and fussed over. :) And notice, Ralph hasn't slowed down; he's still planting and adding to his collection.

This is an outdoor patio, but the canopy is so dense, but for the change in temperature you might think you were still in the greenhouse.

The auction is about to begin. Ralph explains he planted his first palms in 1962, Washingtonia robusta. He began to realize he really liked palms more than the average person when he found himself rising early in the morning so he could plant palms before going to work. He readily acknowledges the overstuffed nature of his garden, and admits a constant struggle between self-control and the desire for more palms. Fortunately his neighbors like the look, and he has been able to extend his planting outward into their gardens, giving the entire area a special tropical quality.

Our own Dave from SoCal has a gift for enticing people to bid up palms. Here he gets the action going with a special hybrid Rhapis from Louis Hooper.

We were fortunate to have Jerry Anderson bring palms from his nursery, including a Ravenea gigantica (?) (not shown), which Jeff Marcus had discussed in his Madagascar slideshow at the January meeting.

Okay, here's the pic of Jerry with the Ravenea gigantica, not looking so terribly gigantic. I put in a couple of bids, but the price ran away from me, not sure who took it home. Possibly someone with a larger garden than mine.

At the end of the day, Ralph wanted to point out his prized Licuala peltata var. 'sumawongii'. I can't believe I walked right past it earlier without noticing the huge entire round leaves.

Thanks Kim. I always enjoy your unique photos and commentary. :)

I also got a Ravenea gigantica from Jerry when I visited his nursery recently. I can't wait to get that bad boy in the ground!
