Great thread Ryan! Good to see so many forum faces.

Bill is one of a kind, and one of the kindest. Don't stand too close to him when he's speaking though, he might poke your eye out with his wild hand maneuvers! ;)

Now about the other Bill, PiousPalms. William, for someone who dosen't drink or "rock the ganja" you sure look zooted in all of your pictures.:lol::lol:

- 2:23PM: The world the Forum creates is actually a small one, even though it connects people from around the planet. Even though two Forum members had never met before, there is an instant bond created between them as soon as they exchange Forum nicknames and avatar descriptions. "BS, bubba. Bubba, BS." This photo had to be taken, there was no way out of it. FM. Keith Austin (bubba) had to be in a photo with Bill, and I was happy to oblige. We all had some great conversations soon after. They ate up a good portion of the day, but it was worth it. I had not seen Keith in over a year, so it was nice to see him at the nursery this weekend.

RDG2009-03-06_15-23-33.jpg

- 2:24PM: "Group hug." Bill's unorthodox behavior can sometimes send the wrong message. Keith was thinking this Californian might be a bit strange in person...

RDG2009-03-06_15-24-32.jpg

- 2:26PM: I broke away from the group for a second to say hello to another Forum member that I recognized from last fall. I remembered from the past October Extravaganza when FM. Brian (zimmy71) had first registered with Palmtalk, like the very Friday of. I got him to pose with the Licuala grandis group, whose one gallon and seven gallon sizes had us busy all weekend.

RDG2009-03-06_15-26-53.jpg

- 4:20PM: The afternoon generally slowed down and we continued to look for more plants to pull. A few customers in suits and office apparel began to trickle in after four o'clock. A minute prior to taking this photo, I heard volunteer Scott Cohen say in a low, but excited tone, "Ryan, get your camera, now..." So, I responded and followed his voice outside the shadehouse to one of the giant Beccariophoenix madagascariensis growing in the landscape. Looking up into the leaf bases, we saw two Black Racer Snakes, Coluber constrictor, in the act of mating. Coitus interruptus!

I would also like to thank everyone that came out and supported us at our sale. Times are very rough for many of us, including myself. So we appreciated seeing all you forum members come out and say "hello".

I would also personally add, that it wasn't anything short of pure pleasure to have Bill Sanford...BS MAN ABOUT PALMS, to join us all here for the long weekend. He was extreamly knowledgeable on most of his palms, especially Dypsis species. He was also always ready to help pull plants and write new tags when asked. You grabbed a great palm Tom, I wondered who got him. D. faneva is a great dwarf Dypsis, that many people seem to ignore when its out for sale. It grows with no problems, has a wide range of adaptability and sports some nice color with bifid leaves. I think many of the Dypsis fans are only interested in the moderate to tall species, but hopefully that will change soon.

I was fortunate to receive a Golf Cart ride from Jeff's Dad,who had heard some guy with a plastic foot was in need of assistance in the parking lot.I latter told him it was a broken foot and we both got a laugh out of that!

Jeff runs an incredibly professional sale.I was lucky to meet the Glock's,renew acquitances with Jeff, Ryan and Scott and of course be in the Presence of BS,International.BS is a great guy and I wish we had more time to talk.He is a Whirling Dervish. He did correct my pronunciation of Dypsis(which for unknown reasons I pronounced Die-pis) to which I made reference to Dave's pronunciation of Sable(Sa-Ball) instead of Say-bull.

I was hoping that Ken and Christian would make it up to the sale but things did not work out.I knew Billy De would be there first.Palmtalk makes buying and cultivating Palms much more of a hoot when you get to personally know the folks on the Board. In that regard, here is a little of my conquest from the Sale already planted and perculating:

BS Man jumps on a plane just to go to the palm sale in Florida?!?!?! Why didn't I think of that...

I have always liked reptiles and when I saw the two of them just sitting there I couldn't resist. Many customers at the Extravaganza are nature enthusiasts so they got a kick out of the snakes as well. It is a great motto for the future, "If BS Man can do it, so can I." Kim, you are always welcome during these special weekends, whenever you could get here. We could really have used your help in many sections including plant groups you know well, such as palms and definitely bromeliads. B)

I hope you get some rain in your area, as we are hoping for our areas as well, I have some things just itching to get in the ground to. - 5:16PM: With Friday behind us, we have about an hour to spend restocking plants. This isn't always the most well executed part of the weekend, as we often have to run around like crazy looking for any more plants we can find. With no customers on the sidewalk, its easier to drive the golf cart and trailer right through the shadehouse.

RDG2009-03-06_18-16-59.jpg

- 5:21PM: When no more plants can be pulled, consolidation becomes the next step. In the Cordyline section, Jeff and Rob bring all the remaining plants up front towards the sidewalk. There were not many left to begin with.

RDG2009-03-06_18-21-19.jpg

- 6:13PM: Big Red Orchid. At the end of each day we gather together back at Jeff's house, to talk plants, discuss the day and to just relax. When I walked outside the first thing I saw was this large orchid a few feet from the house. I do not have the name, but I could probably get it if anyone needs it. I think I saw a tag on it.

RDG2009-03-06_19-13-16.jpg

- 6:18PM: Let the drinking and touring begin. It started to get dark early, two days before the time change. Jeff guides the group around slowly while volunteer and FM. Jim Glock (jglock1) uses his beer hand to point out a few things.

You know me well...

- 6:21PM: The tour focused on Dypsis and Ravenea species while Bill and Jeff compared notes on how plants look different growing in California and Florida. Bill was measuring the height of one of his palms from memory. Kona made sure no one was hiding food in their clothes.

RDG2009-03-06_19-21-30.jpg

- 6:25PM: This Rhapis multifida was looking nice in the moonlight. It turned into a nice nighttime portrait.

RDG2009-03-06_19-25-29.jpg

- 6:26PM: I met a new addition to the grounds this evening. Jeff and Andrea got a new puppy, the dark spot blocking one of Rob's feet.

RDG2009-03-06_19-28-20.jpg

- 6:30PM: Jeff shows an extremely rare Dypsis to Bill that almost made him fall over. Something about a very white petiole...

RDG2009-03-06_19-30-16.jpg

- 6:32PM: This palm is a continued surprise for Jeff and I. Bill is trying to identify it and it is one of the largest specimens we know of in Florida. I will give you two hints, it is from Madagascar and we had one plant for sale during the Extravaganza.

RDG2009-03-06_19-32-45.jpg

- 6:34PM: The tour continued for a short while, until we heard dinner was ready via a nice loud shout. I captured this night portrait of a Dypsis psammophila crownshaft just before heading towards the house. It came out well and would do nicely as a booklet cover, etc.

What a fantastic day. I felt like I was there for the whole thing. I'm going to show up next year, assuming that Californians are still allowed after BS' visit. Thanks for the great tour of an incredible nursery.

That picture of Bill on his hands and knees closely inspecting the rare Dypsis is usually followed by a loud "crunching" sound as he breaks off the flower of the plant next to it. :D:P Just joking!
