The 11th Annual Searle Brothers Plant Extravaganza!

Palmarum

Recommended Posts

Friday, - 7:45AM: All quiet in the Southwest Ranches, but not for long. With 15 minutes until the gates are opened, volunteers, family members and workers scramble to get last minute plants tagged and polish the few remaining details. It's kind of like clockwork by now, as this is the 11th Annual Spring Extravaganza at the nursery.

RDG2009-03-06_08-45-08.jpg

- 7:50AM: Frank "Pops" Searle readies his golf cart to greet customers while talking with volunteer Jim on the left and Andrea Searle.

RDG2009-03-06_08-50-28.jpg

- 7:54AM: Hey, who let that guy in the white shirt in early? Hmm...

RDG2009-03-06_08-54-02.jpg

- 7:57AM: Time to let the cat out of the bag, or is it let the Californian run loose at the Extravaganza? As a surprise for everyone, including Forum members attending this weekend, FM. Bill Sanford (BS Man about Palms) flew in late Thursday evening to attend the sale. He is especially proud of having his very own name tag. FMs. Jeff Searle and Jim Glock (jglock1) accompany Bill to the gate to let in the customers that have been waiting paitently.

- 7:57AM: Bill was honored with a fully customized name tag, that he had to promise not to lose.

RDG2009-03-06_08-57-32.jpg

- Bill had to surrender his seat to Andrea, of course, as the four of them rode down to the gate to begin the weekend properly. Bill's legs blend in very well with the color of the golf cart, like they are invisible.

RDG2009-03-06_08-57-56.jpg

- 7:59AM: As soon as the golf cart reached the fence line, the gate was ordered open and everyone began to pour through.

RDG2009-03-06_08-59-01.jpg

- Everyone started off slowly, then I noticed a few who began to "take point" and became the front of the pack after a few long minutes.

- 7:59AM: The crowd was unusually calm for a Friday morning. I knew as soon as they would get past the holding area things would change as they would all scatter to their respective favorite plant group.

RDG2009-03-06_08-59-26.jpg

- Zooming in, I noticed on the far right side volunteer and FM. Scott Cohen (Scott Cohen) [red shirt] arriving a few seconds before 8:00 AM, making him early for a change. Technically.

RDG2009-03-06_08-59-34.jpg

- Rob! Volunteer and FM. Rob Van der Borg (Borgy230) arrives just ahead of the mob.

- 8:00AM: Towards the left, Pops Searle welcomes everyone to the Extravaganza as they make their way past his golf cart. The onslaught of carts heading his way would make him move in a second.

RDG2009-03-06_09-00-39.jpg

- 8:01AM: Many decide to grab a cart on the way in in anticipation of making runs to the holding area. A few have no problem carrying plants to the holding area the old fashion way. It seems to be faster when grabbing the small stuff.

RDG2009-03-06_09-01-00.jpg

- Cruising by on the left is one of the first Forum members of the morning, Jeff Cramer (street124). He was making a direct run to the shadehouse.

RDG2009-03-06_09-01-04.jpg

- FM. Rick Leitner (TikiRick) takes a moment to say hello to Pops on his way to the rare palms.

- 8:01AM: The exotic shrubs, vines and flowering trees get a quick overview as some of the early birds head straight to the orchids while most turn right into the shadehouse. I followed the first group in, knowing there would be questions waiting for me.

RDG2009-03-06_09-01-22.jpg

- 8:09AM: The decision making process can be a long one when faced with so many palm species. A common dilemma faced by Forum members, such as FM. Bill DeBoe (PiousPalms) standing on the left. Volunteer and FM. Scott Cohen (Scott Cohen) is talking to him about something.

RDG2009-03-06_09-09-36.jpg

- 8:23AM: Quite a few familiar faces. Even if a well known customer doesn't make it to the Extravaganza every season, it is still great to see them once in a while. I must have had several 'catching up' conversations throughout the weekend. Collector and well known photographer Paul Humann is in the center holding the small palm. He reported on the state of his collection after the cold we had and noted his large Red Sealing Wax Palm, Cyrtostachys renda, took 34º F with no damage.

RDG2009-03-06_09-23-19.jpg

- 8:24AM: Rick will not only buy plants for his awesome collection, but will sell ours to other customers as well.

RDG2009-03-06_09-24-20.jpg

- "Smile Bill!" Like I even have to ask. Bill is getting better at not blinking as much as he used to. He is holding up either a Masoala kona or a Masoala madgascariensis, as we had both and they look alike at that size. A few people were asking him why his friend (CuriousPalm), was not with him.

RDG2009-03-06_09-25-57.jpg

- 8:28AM: The intersection is always the hub of activity for the palm collectors. Not only do we put the rarest of the rare here, but this is where the palm knowledgeable people are 'stationed'. Jeff Searle talks with the camera laden customer, while FMs. Mike Harris (waykoolplantz) [purple] and Jeff Cramer (street124) [white shirt] browse the selection.

RDG2009-03-06_09-28-53.jpg

- 8:30AM: When carts first enter the shadehouse I like to keep note of where they have been prior to visiting the palms. Some have landscape plants while many had bromeliads and cordylines.

RDG2009-03-06_09-30-56.jpg

- 8:31AM: Some of the aroids are scattered along the length of the shadehouse sidewalk, while many have their own area at the shadehouse entrance. The more unusual ones are hidden among the palms so customers have to hunt a little to find them, but they stand out. Quantities do not last long as they are snatched up in a hurry, usually all on Friday.

It might slow down if there is a large cart filled with numerous small plants that are individually priced. RDG2009-03-06_10-12-49.jpg

Robert, with so many friends around it was a fantastic weekend. It was three days, but was too short and flew by as it often does. With every new arrival of a palm nut or a Forum member, life at the Extravaganza goes up to a new level.

You have a good eye Robert, that lady in red is Cathy Burger and she did attend the Costa Rican Biennial. She, along with her husband Lew [behind her in photo, just to the left], were on Bus #3.

- 12:13PM: Outside, the sun had broken through just after noon, but the cool breeze kept the temperatures down. I could hear a golf cart coming up behind me.

- 12:15PM: The bromeliad selection had begun to thin out a bit, so Larry Searle went back to restock. The customer on the right, who already had a full cart of bromeliads, seemed excited at the sight of more plants.

- 12:15PM: After listening to the favorable sounds being made, I was expecting the customer on the right to put down her coffee and start grabbing bromeliads off the trailers.

- 12:28PM: I had to continue the photo trend I was working on, so I had to get one more photo of FM. SunnyFL with her husband posing with her stash. The new palms she got were some of her favorites she had been looking for.

- 1:25PM: Frank "Pops" Searle and volunteer Jim manage the holding area. The groups of plants behind them had gone through the register by this time on Friday.

Dear Ryan :)

switch to pro account ! even i recently upgraded my regular account to pro...since you contribute a lot in hig res mode/big sized images, that increase in bandwidth due to constant traffic will come certainly handy And we will be benifited the most ! :hmm::)

Iam eager to see stills from 007 jeffs annual plants sale.

thanks for the effort & love,

Kris :)

love conquers all..

Thanks Ryan...Stills are fentastic ! And i can see it all now...

Thanks Kris,

For a short while last night the bandwidth limit was exceeded. I knew the reset point in the bandwidth counter was today, so I tried to time it so I could continue to post and beat the limit; but my timing was off by about two hours. Anyway, it is back to normal and I have more to post. I am also hosting wedding and birthday/baptism photos on the same account, but I thought they had dropped off in hits, but that wasn't true apparently. I might go to a pro account, but it is easier to just start another free one.
