There will be some hurt feelings with this post but....your sabal is NOT causiarum if it doesn't have these pronounced ligules. This is the most prominent, distinctive characteristic to look for to determine Puerto Rican Sabal. Hybrids will have these ligules too but they will be less pronounced. My foot is men's size 13 USA for scale.

This is an F2 Sabal palmetto x (Sabal palmetto x Sabal causiarum) or self fertilized F2 Sabal palmetto x Sabal causiarum. I don't think there's one mention of this being S. causiarum in the whole thread.  We see your fancy ligule photos :)

Did it defoliate? And how long was the freeze?

This is an amazing old thread that I remember Kyle starting so many years ago. Merrill Wilcox, the party, who added additional photos, was an extremely well known and prominent professor at the University of Florida. I distinctly remember the existence of this palm all the way back to the time when I was a student at the University of Florida, commencing in 1974. I always accused Merrill of being the person who introduced the nearly ubiquitous existence of Butia at virtually every square inch of property around the University of Florida and Gainesville, Florida!

Yes, fully. Got down to 6F this year. Partially defoliated this time around.  I'm tired of these freeze events. Too much work.

Ohh...But it seems to take the cold quite well.  Do you protect it at those temps?

Phyllostachys nigra "Grey Henon" contained in concrete walled bed.

I heated the pool for -5F. I think I wrapped a blanket around the trunk for 6F. It's growing good now. It'll take two years to fully replace the crown with undamaged leaves. My Sabal uresana is finally quickly pushing new growth out the top.
