To follow up on Matty's gig on Hail,I did a little research. The largest Hailstone recorded in the US fell in Aurora ,Nebraska on June 22,2003 during an intense Thunderstorm. The largest stone retrieved was nearly the size of a volleyball and weighed 1.7 pounds. As you may imagine, quite a bit of damage resulted from this episode.

In the world, the most prolific area is in Bangladesh and on the Deccan Plateau of India. The largest hailstone ever recorded fell in Bangladesh on April 14,1986 and weighed 2.25 pounds. It resembled a pumpkin.

The worst hailstorm ever took place in Moradabad,India on April 30,1888. 246 people were killed.

Wow! That is incredible. I wonder if there was more than one hailstone on that day as bug as that. I would imagine that there is no protection from something that big. Except a cave maybe.

Hail is quite normal here, the average is that we get on 30 days each year some hail. Normally it's quite small just on the pictures like math in the other treath. But the hail can be very large sometimes like "pingpong balls" and can give a lot of damage, because the most of the time when that's happening it's in summer time after a hot day and a thunderstorm is coming or something.

Last summer an area in the east was hit with this big hail and damage lot of apple trees, and some growers lost 50-70% from all the apple because big holes in it.

Here is a picture and some movies from last June from that part... There was a lot damage that time over there.. Pictures and movies not mine, i live in another part of the country and that day i don't had hail.
