Construction @ Manambe Lavaka

Construction to replace the main structural members on the west side of the house has begun. Here's some before shots for reference.

The 4" x 6" posts were rotten and termite damaged at the bottom, and the 4" x 12" header beam was termite damaged, rotten, and compressing down. Also, the 5' x 40' deck was rotten and unsafe.

And here we go with construction:

MB-035.jpg

As you can see, the deck has been demo'd and all of the shoring up and temporary support is in place as the posts and beams start to get cut out.

MB-036.jpg

You can see one of the new pressure treated 4" x 12"'s going in. It's strapped up temporarily and then the posts are fitted in underneath it nice and snug.

Stay tuned, I'll keep it going until it's done! Once it's finished and the deck rebuilt I can start to landscape the area under the house.

Construction continues while we have a break in the rains...

The deck joists are starting to get "sistered" into the floor joists.

You can see how he's cutting off the old extended floor joists as he goes.

New 4" x 6" joists being lagged in.

You can get a sense of the 5 foot cantilever here. Hopefully the 4" x 6" joists, set 16" O.C. will allow us to not have to use any angle supports like before. A 5' cantilever will look so cool. Not to code mind you, but it's not like we're gonna be having 50 crazy palm society people up there drinking and gettting roudy......oh wait a minute...oh well, drunk people bounce better.

to be continued....

I made the contractor build that removal of debris into his bid. I know how hard it is to haul stuff up the hill. Nothing large goes up once it goes down.

I went out there and jumped up and down on it. The 4" x 6"'s @ 16" O.C. make for a nice sturdy floor. No supplimentary angle supports will be needed. Yay!!!!!!!!

If I could easily do it I would send you some of our wood from here to build your structure. It is like iron and termites do not eat it.

Some local commercial projects have used woods like that. Stuff is so dense it doesn't even float.

Jeff, $2.68? What the heck are you talking about? That hooker I bought you on El Cajon Blvd.?

John, I totally wanna do another BBQ and invite all ya'll over. I wanted to have the area under the deck landscaped so everyone could see some progress but maybe we'll just be standing in the dirt again. At least there's a path down the canyon now everyone can wander on if they want. Let's plan on early summer everyone. I'll let you know.
