Phoenix loureiroi var. loureiroi

Two small (8" tall) specimens under canopy. 2007/2008 winter, about 10 freezes, the lowest was 23.3F (15 hrs below freezing). 10%-15% leaf damage on both specimens. 2008/2009 winter, low so far after 8 freezes has been 24.1F (14.5 hrs below freezing). One specimen 20% damaged, other specimen no damage.

This is a surprisingly tender Phoenix. None of my other Phoenix, whether exposed or under canopy, have shown one iota of damage (sylvestris, sylvestris robusta, acaulis, theophrastii, reclinata). Plants were purchased from J.D. Andersen as "Phoenix humilis" and provenance is unknown. Perhaps there are stronger forms from other provenances. This is also a very slow-growing Phoenix.

Mine is having it's first winter outside this year. It is about 3' tall in a pot, no canopy and no protection. It has seen 40+ freezes including termpatures down to -9.1°C/15.6°F and one freeze that lasted 38 hours. Somewhat unsurprisingly it's not looking very healthy and if it starts to grow again I will be amazed. I wouldn't say it looks totally dead yet, but it does seem to look more brown each day and given that we can see freezes right though to early to mid April and our growing season often doesn't start until mid to late June, it's prospects are not good. All that said, it was still looking very healthy after the first 20-30 freezes and I think they would have a good chance with our usual winters, but this year has been exceptional. It's definitely less hardy than my canariensis and dactylifera, but it still remains to be seen whether they can survive this winter yet.

I have one I got from Tad that is about 6' OA and had no difficulty with 23F, but an ice storm with temps barely below freezing damaged all the fronds that ice accumulated on. The fronds it hadn't opened yet (it pushes about 6 at a time) were undamaged. It seems that frozen precip (frost, ice, snow, etc) are more damaging than cold to these. This winter I plan on covering it if we are expecting moisture and cold. Over the summer it recovered nicely, and I could remove the damaged fronds and never notice the difference.

One 3-gallon sized plant under partial live oak canopy exhibited damage only to the oldest fronds after a low of 16F with several additional lows in the upper 20's and low 30's. Protection on the coldest night involved a plastic bucket and leaves.
