A few.. of many wild sunsets over the summer.  While Monsoon season was a bust, "Sunset Season" was anything but. Infact, Summer 2019 might be the best i have seen since moving here..      Again, i'll let you be the judge as we go along..

For now, i'll ask you this : How do you prefer your sunsets?.. tame?   ..or wild??..

Kicking it off, a few pics from this past June, as Summer, and Sunset season began..  Thinking it's gonna be a good season.:winkie:

July heat + start of Monsoon season = Epic sunsets.. but first,

While not a sunset, a couple pics taken early one morning that demonstrate just how dramatic our skies can be at almost any hour this time of year..

Epic July sunset #3 Interesting feature seen here:  When circumstances are right, in this case a shower or storm being at just the right position above the horizon, as the sun sets.. falling rain, snow, or hail ( usually liquid precip. ) can be back lit by the sun in a phenomenon called a  "Curtain of Fire" First time i have seen a nice example of it here in the Desert.  Many years ago when i lived in Kansas, passed through a more extreme example on my way home from work one evening. Wish i had pics. Really vivid examples are something you never forget when witnessed in person.

Skipping ahead a bit, on a few evenings with few or no clouds in the sky this summer,  there were extra colorful sunsets, especially notable around mid August.  Turns out it was a surprise infusion of both Volcanic Dust from a couple smaller eruptions half a world away, and Smoke particulate circulating high into the Stratosphere providing extra vivid color at this time.  Headed toward the end of August, this enhanced color saturation would help create some truly unforgettable sunsets. Looking toward the center - right hand side in the second picture, you can see a decent example of high altitude Crepuscular rays, aka: shadows cast by distant clouds, or mountains.

While July's sunsets were good.. Wasn't quite prepared for what was to come in August, especially toward the end of the month. As mentioned at the end of the last post, the surprise infusion of smoke and Volcanic ash particulate circulating high above would help to create some of the best sunsets i have seen here, and in quite some time.. anywhere else.

Seemed like the sky decided to pull out all the stops, so to say, almost nightly, all month.

Last sunset of the month..

This might be "the" sunset sequence of the summer.. let alone one seen the entire time living here.  Had been anticipating a chance of storms all day but nothing really materialized overhead. Good stuff was brewing down by Tucson where some big, high- topped storms had been bubbling up all day. Wasn't sure if anything would make it up this way but debris clouds from collapsing storms might create another good sunset.

This is one of those times i wish i had a much better camera as the tops of these storms were so high that they filled the sky from overhead to the horizon and without an extra wide angle option, it was impossible to capture the scope of how big these storms were as they approached.  Put in perspective, while the leading edge of the Anvil is passing overhead, base of these storms is just moving into Eloy, down by Tucson..
As the sun set, there wasn't a position above that didn't present something interesting. Sunset finale would last so long tonight that it would be pretty dark  before the last hints of color disappeared from the sky.. and in an odd direction, due east. Tried to grab a couple pics but too dark to take anything good w/ this camera. Wayy too grainy.  Later on, these same storms would generate a decent electrical storm as they moved over head.. Not much rain though.. While not all that great a picture, tried to grab  pics w/ lightning as the storm headed toward the north east side of town.  One crazy light show for sure... Guarantee the camera i use will be better next time...

Actually a sunrise, not that anyone would know without being told. But with so many cloud free mornings this season it was good to get a nice bit of colour reflected in the sky this morning.

Also, squadrons of Magpie Geese moving in to demolish the remaining Mangos, which is not so nice.

I have friends visiting from out of town. I’m glad the desert sky gave them a proper welcome. B)2236A7AA-8F1B-4D88-BA25-8E08B35413DD.thumb.jpeg.3f2cdfd010466fb2d5c5a83032ca2860.jpeg

When mother Nature puts on a show in Darwin ( last night and coinciding with the highest astronomical tide of the year at 8.1m ), well even 'point and click' photographers like me can capture a good shot or 2

Tonight's somewhat subdued, but otherwise decent Sunset.

If we don't hit 90F tomorrow, and do on Wednesday.. would be the latest first 90 deg day in 25 years.. That said.. still currently forecast to clock out first 100F of the year by Saturday / Sunday, which would be a week or so ahead of schedule ( May 2nd is average for Phoenix ).. Could go above that by the start of next week for a day or two.  Fitting since i saw the first flowers of the season on some of the Saguaro planted by our local mall earlier today.

" Part 2" ..from the "Ready, Set, Scorch" thread in the Weather Section..  When i asked for Sizzling summer sunsets, didn't expect to see anything on this level, so soon.  Regardless, As mentioned, If a preview of the "Season" to come, i'll take it!..

While the first few are pretty nice.. The last few are something i'd anticipate seeing while living in Kansas, after especially strong, Tornadic-type storms had passed through, not here in AZ.. in MAY.

As the sunsets, things get wild.. especially as this " Gravity Wave " induced inflow line (  string of developing Cumulus along the north- moving outflow ) passes to the north, and the 40-50K high Anvil is opened up to the setting sun.. Mammatus Clouds anybody?  Only thing keeping the colors from being more intense is another area of clouds tempering the setting sun far off to the west in Southeastern CA.

Well after the sun has set, it just gets even wilder..  Took these while running to the store and getting something to eat. Camera may not capture it all that great, esp. while driving, but you get the picture. It is close to 8pm when these are taken also. FYI, a seasoned storm chaser knows how to safely take pictures while driving:winkie: Were a few small trees down in a couple spots where i stopped to pick up dinner.

While the 2020 Southwestern Summer Monsoon season has been a bust, there have been at least a few decent sunsets this summer.. Still a few weeks to go before Autumn, and the end of Monsoon season arrives.. so maybe there will be a few more.

The final " Sunset " cuts of summer 2020..

A few Autumn season stunners trying to make up for a lackluster summer.. Always interesting how wildly a sunset can vary day to day.  Examining a little closer, ( and looking back over the " Monsoon 2020 " thread ) you can see the neighbor's Chilean Mesquite, which had suffered blow down over the summer, lost it's battle against the elements. Not sure when the last big section came down, let alone what caused it to snap ( been quiet here ) but was hanging  up against the tree the day before Halloween.  Neighborhood " Chop-scapers " came through and finished it off.. Taking everything remaining down, but leaving the trunk. We'll see if it recovers in the spring. Wide open sky is great for now.. Won't be come June, no matter who lives here.

I haven't had my housing out in the water for a while now but before Go-pro's and drones, I used to swim out mostly in the early morning to shoot surfing and sunrises.  Sometimes I did afternoon sessions as well, which presented another set of challenges on the West Coast and shooting into a setting sun.  This was one January swell here in San Diego with the cliffs on fire with the setting sun's golden light.  The second photo I snapped as I was swimming in as the sun sets over the Pacific.  The best sunsets locally are in November, December and January, so maybe it's time for me to get out the housing and camera body that goes with it again.

So many stunning sunsets! I haven’t dropped in here for a long time, and I see I’ve missed out! At the end of October I caught several bright sunsets  and a palmy sunrise in San Diego, so here’s a sample.

Thanks Tracy! Shooting a sunset is always fun, trying to find ways to make it unique. The little girl scampering around was so enthusiastic. :)

After digging around a bit ( and convincing a SD card to read, lol ) found a sunset series i'd taken on a trip to San Diego -back in September of 2012-. Don't remember posting them here anywhere, couldn't find any when i looked around.. so no flogging allowed if i did, and don't remember where:lol::D. Anyway,  Among many things i'm looking forward to once closer to the coast, capturing sunsets from the beach again are one of those things i look forward to the most, during the summer esp.

Pretty sure anyone in San Diego knows the location.. For others unfamiliar, North Bluff Preserve/ Del Mar Dog Beach in Del Mar, across the road from the Racetrack. 'Couple nice, easily viewable  garden displays nearby as well. Have walked the entire length of the beach down to Powerhouse Park on past trips.

North Bluff Preserve/ Del Mar Dog Beach in Del Mar, across the road from the Racetrack.

A pair of sunsets from an October evening from just up the road in Solana Beach at a spot known to long time locals as "Pill Box" and to others as Fletcher Cove.  Those washies have gotten a little taller since I shot this in 2011.

Sometimes a clear calm sky can provide fantastic lighting at sunset; no dramatic clouds or bright colors, just subtle light to work with.  Last night before leaving the office I caught this nice reflective moment.

Sunrise today in Leucadia 500 meters west of my garden.  Mount Soledad in La Jolla can be seen in the second photo looking to the south on the horizon.

Some 'more decent, recent sky-works:

Great example of why CirroStratus/ CirroCumulus are great " Sunset " clouds

Decent sunset after hitting 85F earlier.. Might not be something noticed by some but cloud varieties in the sky this evening are more typical of summer..  Crispy/ bubbly Alto and Cirro Cumulus Castellantus ( resembling a Castle Turret )/ Floccus ( resembling lumpy Fleece/ Sheep's Wool ), both indicative of increasing, warm season convection/instability. Often during the cooler months, these cloud types are less distinctly outlined.  Bird Bomb is a bonus, lol.
