Thanks Paul. I hope you have a great 2009 as well. I suppose many places with similar climates and vocations have a lot in common. The Imperial beer actually was pretty good.

Randy,

The last time I had anything stolen of consequence was in Sao Paulo in 1991 when a guy stuck a gun in my head and had me ride around with him for 45 minutes before taking off with my car. I hope it is along time before another experience. I am certainly being more alert at home as well.

We went for a little hike in Manuel Antonio National Park to beach number 3. It was well worth the effort. The beach is great.

The trail was really a road and easy walking. I always find it intersting how people approach places they visit. This has to do with where they live and what is normal for them. For us being in a tropical forest is more than normal. And, for Raquel who was raised in the middle of the jungle even more so. She is much more at home in the forest than I am. She was raised running around barefoot in the jungle.

We thought we would see some monkies and were not dissappointed. We do not have this particular one around here in Amazonas.

MAparque14.jpg

There were a few nice palms in the forest.

The beach was a great place to swim. I found it interesting that many of the people on the trail did not come to swim, only to look at the water. Well to each their own.

There were some raccoons hanging around that looked like they could steal something from a bag. Or, maybe a bag. Luckily they did not have a car. Costa Rica has a mix of fauna. There are animals we have here in Amazonia, and others we do not that are more at home in North America. The raccoon in one of them.

Since we made most of our meals in the hotel in our apartment this supermarket became the main source of food. One thing about shopping in Costa Rica I noticed is that you end up with a lot of large coins in your pocket.

MAsupermarket.jpg

Caio always enjoyed the trips to the supermarket.

CaioManuelAntonioDec6.jpg

Manuel Antonio runs along a ridge and the views are beautiful. I did not take any good pictures of the main street. I wish I had on retrospect though. I liked this building which was on the main street.

Jeff,

I figured they were a close relative to the tucumã palm we have here. I really liked the Attaleas in the area as well.

Bren,

They had a good wine selection at the market. So, I eneded up having wine a lot. Here are some pictures I took on the deck of the hotel the last evening I was there while drinking some wine and smoking a cuban cigar I bought on the beach. The hotel used a lot of crotons in the landscaping which came out nice mixed with the palms.

Don K. - Gracias for posting these great photos from your trip to Costa Rca. Your pictures from Manuel Antonio and Quepos brought back pleasant memories from when we were there last May. Infact you took some of the very same or similar shots that I did while there! Jeff A. couldn't have picked a more beautiful spot by moving to this area of Costa Rica. Looks like you, Raquel and Caio enjoyed yourselves as well. Just think, a little more than a year and it will be time for the IPS Biennial in Brasil. Hoping to attend that event so may see you then.

Hawaii Island (Big Island), leeward coast, 19 degrees N. latitude, south Kona mauka at approx. 380m (1,250 ft.) and about 1.6 km (1-mile) upslope from ocean.

No record of a hurricane passing over this island (yet!).

Summer maximum rainfall - variable averaging 900-1150mm (35-45") - Perfect drainage on black volcanic rocky soil.

Nice sunsets!

Lovely photos of a lovely place Don. Looks like you had a great time apart from the robbery.

Gold Coast, Queensland Latitude 28S. Mild, Humid Subtropical climate. Rainfall - not consistent enough!

Al,

It for sure is a great setting there. I hope to see you in Rio. And, if you can stop by Manaus and I will give you a tour of my garden in Paricatuba which by then should look quite a bit different. The bridge over the Negro River will be finished by then so it will be a short hop over.

Daryl,

I am glad you enjoyed the trip. Fortunately the good memories are the ones that prevailed. It is a beautiful place.
