While I was in SFBG at Strybing Arboretum I came across my first Plectocomia himalayana! These are very interesting rattan palms. Sorry the photos are not that good. The shot is of the entire palms. It has two main branches, with one climbing up the trunk of a tree on the left, and another branch climbing up the branches and leaves of a dicot tree. I noticed that where the trunk bends, the palm will send out another branch! I've always heard that rattan palms branched, albeit not dichotomously, but never knew how since all photos of them just show a mess of pinnate fronds. I'm sorry these aren't the best quality.

The next photos are taken in Oakland's Lakeside Palmetum. It's one of the better microclimates in the bay area, with more summer heat and much less fog.
