Winter is just about over, and my lows for the past 3 days have been at or above 50F. My low this morning was 55F. We could sure use some more rain. All of the water districts in the Bay Area are talking about a 25% reduction in water usage.

The storm window I mentioned a bit ago is coming. Here is the latest on it. It's a good quick cold storm ...

HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER AUTHORITY

MARCH 18, 2009 2:00pm Pacific Time

SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA ...

THE SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA WEATHER AUTHORITY HAS UPDATED A HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK ...

THE OUTLOOK ISSUED YESTERDAY SAID THAT NOAA'S MODELS SHOWED THE STORM GIVING US ONLY VERY LIGHT RAIN WITH NOT MUCH TO IT ACROSS SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA. THIS WAS GOING AGAINST THE SCWXA UJEAS PROGRAM IN GIVING THE STORM TRACK DIRECTLY INTO THE AREA.

LATEST OUTPUTS NOW FROM NOAA'S MODELS NOW ARE INLINE WITH THE UJEAS SO CONFIDENCE IS GROWING IN A FORECASTER STANCE OF A STORM SYSTEM HITTING THIS WEEKEND.

HIGH CLOUDS WILL STREAM AHEAD FOR A MOSTLY CLOUDY DAY ON THURSDAY, THEN THE STORM SYSTEM HITS EARLY SUNDAY ON THE PROJECTIONS. THE WINDS WILL BE STRONG OUT THERE ACROSS THE ENTIRE FORECAST AREA. GOING TO GO WITH 30 TO 40 MPH IN GUSTS EVEN AT THE COAST RIGHT NOW WITH EVEN STRONG GUSTS IN THE MOUNTAINS. NO DOUBT WIND WARNINGS AND ADVISORIES WILL BE NEEDED FOR THE STORM SYSTEM.

SNOW LEVELS LOOK TO BE AT THE PASSES FOR THIS COLDER TYPE SYSTEM SO AM WATCHING AND WILL ISSUE THE APPROPRIATE WINTER WATCH IF NEEDED IN THOSE AREAS. STILL KEEP IN MIND A STORM SYSTEM IS COMING FROM A COLD SOURCE SO PLANS ON SUNDAY COULD BE ALTERED AS A RESULT.

DUE TO THE STORM TRAJECTORY AND COLD AIR ALOFT, A CHANCE OF THUNDERSTORMS WILL BE POSSIBLE FROM LOS ANGELES LATITUDE NORTHWARD SUNDAY ...

Does this late system mean I should cover my Pride of Maderia (Echium candicans)? About 50% of the time, I get a late frost just as the flower buds are half developed, and they get whacked.

You're lucky. My Echium is not showing any bud development at all....... it is a year old but it quintupuled in size.

Maybe next year. I saw a number of them in Hayward yesterday with half developed flowers in bloom. Very nice!

At least it's a quick punch right Happ? Just one of those run-away systems lol. Anyway I'm kind of hoping for more rain. It looks pretty dynamic further North say Inland Empire / LA latitude for thunderstorms with those dynamics but other than that a good refresher. I don't know about a foot or two feet of snow like accu-weather predicts here but still a good quick snow hit.

I would recommend it. I just looked at your location via your profile and a very cold night up there is going to hit SATURDAY NIGHT INTO SUNDAY MORNING.

Crap. My Delonix is starting to show signs of wanting to leaf out, so I watered it real well for the first time all winter yesterday hoping it would pop. I hope it dosen't loose those new growth points. I rubbed out all the lower ones thinking the top ones were going.

Good luck, Matty. I gave up on royal poinciana ever flowering. Someone posted a photo a few years ago of a real beauty in San Diego [i think near Harbor Drive?]

Hoping for some rainfall but it seems forecasting showers is a certain jinx  We can be sure that it will get cold [even San Diego airport could observe minimums below 50F\ 10C Monday morning].

Double crap! This is the problem of living in N. Calif....Today is georgeous here, the warmest day of the year, upper 70's, and then cold on Sat. I was moving plants out today.....guess I'll have to move them back under cover. I hope this is the last blast of winter, but I've been saying that for weeks. I don't expect much rain out of this either. All of the fronts have been weak this year.

It didn't get nearly as cold here last night as predicted (39 predicted, 45 actual). Many rain showers overnight but sunny today.

Hopefully this arctic push will fizzle out.

I can vouch for the cold. The front moved through N. Calif. last night and I got very little rain from it. It was mild this morning but the temps are dropping with strong NNW winds gusting up to 30 MPH. If the winds subside tonight, I expect near freezing and frost. It is only 54 F here at noon. S. Calif. prepare yourself. The winds make it seem much colder.

It is SPRING 3/20/2009 everywhere in the northern hemisphere that can grow palms ,except maybe California ! :mrlooney::lol: just joking!

We got a quick 10 minute downpour here, then nothing else but wind. Temps maxed out at 61F. It should get progressively warmer as the week goes on.

It's still dark here in N. Calif., but at 6 AM my temp is 35.8F and I expect there will be a white frost on the roof tops this morning. It looks like a warming trend starting today, and about time. I spread fertilizer before this last front expecting rain. It never came, so I'll have to water it in today.

My wife put her car in the garage when I issued the Frost Advisory yesterday morning. She hates scraping ice! LOL. The trees are mine to take care of though. Put the dog inside too.

I had 37.7 this morning. But no frost in my car windshield (just unfrozen water). A hint of it on the lower Northern slope of the roof. Once again I'm the coldest non-Temecula microclimate in SD county!

I think Scott is right that this thread is losing it's pertinence after this morning though the usual cold locations could see another chilly morning tomorrow. March is basically the end of the cold season :mrlooney: The strong wind kept my temp from dropping too low but it was the first night below 50F in several weeks. Looks like a nice week ahead w/ dry air & sunny skies.

Cold weather is not over yet. It's 38F in Walnut Creek this morning, the coldest it's been in over 2 weeks. I see it's about the same in Temecula. We may get rain on Monday, fingers crossed. My lows have been running about 48-54 and things are begining to grow. Roses and Iris in full bud and they should be georgeous next week. All the Tracheycarpus are flowering, also some Chamaerops and the Livistonas.

36.9F at my place. On the verge of frost. I had all my high power fans blowing toward O-side Terry's house, or it might have been colder :)

I saw 42.6F yesterday, so your fans weren't affecting me much. I haven't seen anything lower than that for a couple weeks now.

Winter's over now? Can I call it done yet? I think I can.

I hear ya Bill. I've killed several Delonix regia by getting fooled with April warmth, pulling them out of the greenhouse, only to have them wither and rot away in our May gray.
