Well for anyone living in the UK & Ireland winter 2009/10 was a wake up call (despite the gulf stream!), being as it was the coldest for nearly 50 years here (min -8C which was grim enough, but it was the prolonged nature of the cold that was the problem). Scotland, Northern England, and then Ireland took the worst of the weather I think.

The good news is that I haven't (yet) lost any palms but a few have some damage for which I plan some additional protection next winter, really could use a mild one though

Ken, I'm actually up not far from you in Fredericksburg, VA working on a presentation for tomorrow in a hotel room. Taking "palmtalk breaks". When I have some more free time, I'll post some pictures from my July trip to Yalta.

Oh wow! You are (or were anyway) just about 40 minutes south of me on I-95. Quaint small city Fredericksburg is. Hope your presentation went well! You should have stopped up and said hey!

So, if there are Sabal Palmetto growing in Sochi, RU, then I guess that means that the Sabal Palmetto in VA Beach are the farthest north growing ones in North America. Still not too bad.
