December weather

Recommended Posts

Sunny,

I had ice on my windshield as well! I was surprised. My neighbor had a white lawn too! I brought my palm seedlings inside the unheated greenhouse which showed a temp of 44. Outside I was measuring 39 at 7 am. I'm a little worried about my planted palms & other tropicals.

Yes, I think this doesn't bode well - it's only early December, yet we've been having weather that we'd normally expect in January - as Ray mentioned. I do believe that we could have a hard freeze this winter, at least one. A lot of sensitive tropicals could be lost. I'm worried about my planted tropicals as well, including my pandanus, which now has a little bit of trunk.

The official end of the rainy season was on 11/30, but we are still getting rain almost daily. This time last year I was sick of the rain and I was ready for it to end, but this year I am appreciating it more. I like the way it cools everything down at night and makes it more comfortable to sleep. The hot dry Summer is getting ready to start, but I'll be dreaming of May when the rains start again...

How are you guys in SE QLD going? Just been seeing incredible hail storms and lightening on the news tonight.

Best regards

Don't mean to brag, but it is perfect palm weather here lately. Hot and humid all day, with afternoon storms most days. I had 450mm in my rain gauge for November, pretty good going. The soil in my garden is wet through and everything is growing like crazy, and we are only 6 days into summer...woohoo! Every day is over 30C and nights are over 20C. The humidity is quite high, and at the moment it is 32C and not a breath of wind...very tropical!

It was not too bad out there the past couple days with highs in the mid 70's and lots of sun ... Really, the reality of the latitude here manifests itself with sunburns in December.... Marginal palms grow here because of the rather intense for December sun even though the temps have kinda sucked here recenty. Amazingly, all my palms have continued to grow despite the early winter chill.

Yeah Bill....even though its been far colder than the norm lately, we still cant complain too much.

And, IMO, there is really not all that much to worry about unless the temps are going to get into the middle 20's. Even upper 20's for short duration wont cause terrible damage for 99% of the palms in our yards. Of course, Id bring Lipstick palms in though :mrlooney:

I was so hopeing my Parajubaeas could come through another winter without any damage, but my P. TVT is to big to cover now. I will cover my 4' Jubeaopsis. Remember, it just takes one freezing night to kill or damage a lot of palms. If you have any smaller palms, just throwing a sheet over them will add a lot of protection and keep the frost off the fronds. A 100 watt light bulb at their base will help more.

So far Walnut Creek has been chilly, but no killing frost yet. Fog has been forming every morning and that keeps the temps. higher at night, but lower during the day. I'm sure we will run out of fog soon. :(

I think the Tampa airport reports higher than reality low temps. This morning when I left my house for work it was 41.5f. When I went by the airport my car was reporting a 41f outside temp as well as a buisness on the side of the road. But the airport is reporting 46F.

I too have noticed that the Tampa AP sometimes seems to read a little higher than expected.

I am at the AP right now getting ready to take off and, for what its worth, when I drove into the AP, my car themometer also read 46F. When I drove across the Courtney Campbell Causeway, my car's thermometer read 51F. I suspect the AP's thermometer is on the bay side of the airport.

In any case, I am wondering if this AP reading is really very representative of the area as a whole.

It's a bit cool over here at the moment. It's more like early November weather. Summer sort of kicks in on the weekend. Whether it will stay for a while is another thing.

Well, Central FL's wacky winter weather continues. Yesterday morning, at the school I teach at in Hudson (14 mi N and W rural) from me, it looked like snow with 34F and heavy frost - 39F at my house no frost. Today it hit 80F and the dewpoint moved just above 60F under sunny skies. This is the first 80F temp since, well, I don't know! A month? November and Dec have been so cold, I have recorded easily 9 nights in the 30's so far but my tomatoes are producing their heads off! Lowest has been 36.9F with frost on the outer edges of the yards. I hate winter!!!!!! Greg basking in the sun in New Port Richey with a nice breeze..........

If you think the Tampa airport's cold morning temperatures are skewed, look at the Orlando Exec. Airport's reports on chilly mornings. In the evening it can have dropped into the mid 40s everywhere else, but be 50-51 there. All that pavement and plane exhaust, plus the urban heat island really add up. Orlando Intl. temps tend to be more consistent with the readings I get in Maitland. Where did the chill go? I was kind of enjoying it for a change, plus our palms will be really hardened off in case we get a freeze. Well at least we have some rain on the way.

:DOOMSAYERS forecast Perth would run dry as a result of climate change, but the West Australian capital is awash with the most plentiful water supplies of all the mainland capitals.

Adelaide and Melbourne have replaced Perth and Brisbane as the cities facing water shortages.

The dire predictions for Perth and Brisbane were not fulfilled because of a combination of community effort, well-targeted infrastructure and more rain.

Residents of the South Australian and Victorian capitals are hoping for similar salvation, but in Adelaide authorities are slow to tackle excessive water use.

The big dry has had no impact on water in Darwin and Hobart, but the other capitals have struggled to secure reliable supplies amid rainfall declines.

Ecologist Tim Flannery warned in 2005 that Perth faced "catastrophic failure" of its water supply due to climate change and could become the "first ghost metropolis". Professor Flannery could not be reached for comment yesterday. "

-From "The Australian" newspaper today.

The part in bold is what annoys me the most. Flannery is our "Al Gore mini-me". Makes all sorts of wild and terrifying statements... when they don't come to fruition, he is no-where to be seen. He and those like him should be accountable for being in the public eye and then making such shameful statements based which are heavy on fear and light on facts. The next time he makes a "prediction", he should be asked "and if it doesn't happen, will you shut up?" :rage:

Miccles, you've had a great amount of rain overnight.

My garden recorded a min of 20C last night and 21C in my tunnel. We've hit 38.4C today which is much more like December for us. It's now cooled down to around 37C and I just went for a walk through my rainforest and the native bees which have no stings have all come to lay in the shade of my garden, so where ever you walk millions of little insects jump up and buzz around.

Interesting about the water predictions. We've had an unusual year for rain, with more falling in last summer, autumn and spring than usual and less in winter. The official rainfall for 08 is 805mm vs the average of 855mm, so you can say we're pretty much bang on the longterm average this year, or at least in the 50th percentile. Not bad for a climate that varies quite a bit from year to year. All the lakes have plenty of water in them, the water table has come way up, my bore has heaps of pressure with good water. As far as offical rainfall readings are concerned, I beleive they are being tampered with. Many times I get almost double what is recorded. Just the other day my back patio flooded, and the rain was so fat and hard it was pushing the laserlite roof sheeting apart letting water through, and yet the offical reading on the computer for that rain event was 0.4mm. I reckon I got 20mm in 20 minutes. If that is what has been going on, and looking at the rivers and lakes being full or close to full, I am thinking that we've had an above average year for rain. If you ask quite a few around Perth, they'll say that a part of there garden or property had water flood the area and not drain away for ages or something like that this year.

That Flannery guy comes from Sydney doesn't he. :D Maybe he came to Perth once on a stopover to South Africa or something, and instantly knows everything about the place.

The story is even wetter in the southwest. Down near Albany they got over 200mm for Nov and all the paddocks are flooded and boggy. It ruined the wheat crops and anything they could harvest was too flooded to get the harvester into. The harvesters were getting bogged in the fields. They've had so much rain down in the SW that they have barely had any fine weather and can't wait for the rain to stop. It's been raining virtually every day down there.

So dry Perth and the SW is not.

Best regards

I was supposed to be in Great Falls, Montana this week with my family. But, that did not work out and the farthest north we got was Costa Rica. My dad told me he had a 4 foot snow drift in the front yard the warmest it got today was around -15 F. I found this information interesting on the Weather.com. I would still have loved to be there, but my wife who has never been out of the tropics has her doubts.

A general six- to twelve-inch swath of snow fell from Montana into Minnesota over the weekend. A few spots received up to 14 inches of new snow.

The snow will taper off across the Upper Midwest overnight, though their may still be a few straggling snow showers Monday morning.

But what this storm will likely be remembered for are the arctic temperatures, howling winds, and dangerous wind chills that accompanied it.

High temperatures across the northern Plains and Upper Midwest were below zero on Sunday and the arctic air is not going away anytime soon.

For some places from Montana into North Dakota, it will not get above zero for the next several days.

With winds tapering off, low temperatures will bottom out by Tuesday morning, with some areas possibly dropping to 30 below zero. This will be within record territory.

On Sunday, winds gusted over 40 miles per hour across the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Minnesota. This dropped wind chills to 30 to 40 below zero in some areas.

Winds will begin to taper off across the Dakotas overnight. But it will continue to be windy in Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Michigan on Monday. This will continue to keep wind chills well below zero.

People should be sure to limit outdoor exposure and make sure they are well protected against hypothermia and frostbite when venturing into this dangerous cold.

Tyrone,

When I was growing up in the 50s and 60s in Montana such temperatures were a common part of the winter. I remember having school cancelled due to temperatures of around minus 40 F, winds of up to 50 mph, and snow. We made use of the day by putting on a lot of clothes and jumping off the fence in our yard into the snow drifts. I also remember once when while in high school when I was playing american football and we had a game where the temperature was around minus 15 F. It was so cold that when you hit someone it felt like your bones would break. When it is that cold the lights at night reflect up into the sky like beams as the light waves travel up through the ice crystals. That all seems a long way away from where I am on the equator.

It has been raining a lot this year already. Which for me is fine. It keeps the temperatures down and saves work watering.

Don, I would never have thought that the night lights would look different when it's so cold. Where I came from, I only ever saw frost twice in all my school years and by 7am it was gone. Apart from that the only place I saw ice was in my freezer or an icey pole. When I was going to school we used to be sent home when the temp reached 40C. Those were the days before air conditioning in schools, and often we didn't even have fans. But we didn't complain, it made us tough. The younger generation just don't know how to cope with that sort of thing now. :D
