Very nice shots Kostas. It is a real pleasure to see the progress on some of your palms.

Thank you very much Eric!!! :)

Yes,all of my varieties are edible. These are my very first bunches from my bananas so the kilos per year are not yet set, plus these bunches are from only 2 of the 6 varieties I currently have in the ground with many more to follow once I make the side patios I want. Only these 2 were big enough to flower this year and another seems that it will be ready to flower for its first time next year, but the rest need some more years. So next year,I should get at least 3 bunches. A bunch of 12kg is undersized for 'Kandrian' but i am very happy with it as it only had 4 leafs at flowering and it was the first bunch of the mat. Bunch size depends on variety too so while others can give a 40kg bunch others max at around 7 kg. My varieties should range from 30kg to around 12kg. In the not too distant future,I hope to be getting around 25bunches per year, each of which is usually good for 2 weeks and thus can offer bananas year round but this needs some good planning and more varieties in the ground. My immediate future goal is 12-20bunches per year starting 2-3years after the side patios are made :)

What varieties of bananas you have planted in the ground? :)

Thank you very much Robin for your kind comments! :) Its nice to be able to see growth on many things yearound in Pyrgos!

Thanks for letting me know of Howeas growing in full sun in Monaco, that's awesome! Pyrgos is hotter in summer than Monaco though and it's during those days hotter than 35C that damage happens, which are very few in Pyrgos but maybe nonexistent in Monaco from the climate graphs I saw. I really hope it's as you suggest and that they just need a few more years to fully sun acclimate or just need to grow past the winter shade cast by the house and shed, where they will receive the same amount of sun all year long and produce better sun acclimated leafs yearound. In any case, the Syagrus romanzoffiana growing over them should help them quite a bit with some shade once it spreads it's leafs more, probably even before this summers heatwaves. A smaller, younger Howea forsteriana growing inside a Washingtonia robusta(Sonora)'s canopy, looks perfect yearound and puts on bulk fast too!

My biggest Howea should start showing some trunk sometime this year! Hope it grows it fat, green and nice! :)

Hi Jureca,

In the ground I have Musa "Kandrian","Pisang Ceylon","Red Iholene","Brazilian Tall",a locally collected unknown variety belonging to the Bluggoe subgroup and a probable Fe'i variety from Cuba. Many more are waiting in pots to be planted in the ground when I finally make some patios I have long been planning to...

Thank you Ante! :) W. robusta grow crazy fast in Pyrgos with the shallow water table! I have 4 more in pots I want to plant somewhere in the garden as well as they ask for nothing while growing tall pretty fast!

Jureca, great to know you are missing the updates! :)

I went to Pyrgos a couple times since then maybe and did maintenance work and planted a few plants and palms, but didn't take photos due to lack of time. It will be a couple weeks before i go there again and take pictures to post but....tomorrow i am receiving a nice palm order from FL and in a few days from Germany as well  So there will be some nice and noticeable additions after this coming planting :)

Great garden, really impressive growth over the course of your blog on most of your palms. How are the Traccies doing? I would of thought it was too hot in Athens for them but they look good, are they in shade? Mine are really motoring this year. I like how you pushing the boundaries as I try and do the same here in England.

Thank you very much for your kind comments! :)

Trachycarpus are doing great in Pyrgos, they love life there with unlimited underground water supply and keep huge crowns of leafs for their species, something they don't do in the hotter suburbs of Athens. They still live ok in Athens but prefer areas with plenty of water and not as hot and dry weather. Pyrgos is milder, has higher humidity and is wet for 9months of the year. Pretty perfect Trachycarpus weather. I get more than 30cm of trunk annually on them. They are in sun for a good part of the day or even most of the day now as they are emerging from some olive trees that were cutting the morning sun. My only complain about them is that they are not setting viable seeds for me. They have set maybe 10-20viable seeds during the years I have had them and I didn't manage to collect them in time,so I lost even these. I want to grow a few more from their seeds to hopefully have them set a bounty of viable seeds annually at some point. No more Trachycarpus fortunei remain on the farm I got mine from, most died from borers and the rest were cut down,so I don't have a source for the same, robust Trachycarpus(their trunks are normal sized and not skinny like what I can find,as mine were farm grown in the ground locally).

Wish you the best of luck zone pushing and to get a nice, long term surviving mix of tropicals! :)

Thank you for the appreciation and interest Milos, Ovar and Maxim, glad you like the photos and my garden! :) I feel the same, love watching photos and updates of palms!

I am on a boat trip,so unfortunately I won't have any new photos from my garden any sooner than 2 weeks, but since you are asking so much for an update,I will give you a teaser of what's gonna be planted next time!

My newest order from Florida arrived a few days ago with some favorites I have long wanted to plant! Unfortunately shipping was hard on them and they arrived a little rough but hopefully they should survive, establish and recover fine relatively fast :)

Here they are:

Roystonea elata, the worse affected with most leafs dead but a fast grower

Acrocomia aculeata arrived in pretty good shape and should grow great :)

Kentiopsis oliviformis are in decent shape but they will definitely look rough for a while...they are supposedly slow growers so these may take a while to look flawless again

They are all in recovery and waiting for their ground planting upon my return. Them and others as well! :) Hope they recover ok and fast!!!

Went to Pyrgos last week and did quite a few plantings and maintenance work. Planted all bigger new arrivals and upped the watering to help them with establishing. Fixed the watering pump which was partially busted during my absence, helpfully without much effect to the plants :)

They were very busy days and I didn't get to plant everything I wanted. I didn't get to take pictures unfortunately except for a few plants doing something unusual or looking impressive, all which non palms. I didn't even photograph the new plantings, though they didn't look too hot, from being damaged from shipping.

Anyway, here are the few pictures I did take :)

Thank you very much Flo and Stelios! :)

The first rains of the season have already fallen at Pygros with 44.4mm of rain, making a great start from early on,for the rainy season and the garden! I am sure the ferns, epiphytes and new plantings appreciate this and thirsty plants got their water fix for the week. Hopefully all the dirt and filthiness accumulated during the dry season has been washed off the plant leafs and that the extra water helps the new and stressed plantings recover faster :)

Its rainy these days here and I guess there too.

Great weather:)

How many palms you have and how many more the place can take?

Seeing you acquiring regularly plants there must still be space available there.

How it feels to live in there,I mean surrounded by those gems.

Thank you very much for your kind comments! :)

I honestly am not sure how many palms are in the ground...never really counted them the last years. The place can only take a few more tenths of them now,not too many more, and those only after some hardscape work that needs to be done, but a future expansion is in the plans, though it will be mainly for growing large tropical trees, cycads, bamboo, bananas and other tropicals. Of course, a few select large growing palm species i always wanted will definitely be included! :)

It feels really great when i am there, waking up and seeing a palmy landscape right out my door, walking among palms i only got to see previously in photos or during my trips to Florida! Its an awesome feeling :) Shame i don't get to see them too often though as my work is in Athens. At least they are there and grow to greet me bigger each time, its worth it for those days a year i get to live among them :)

Thank you Pip! :) It really needs quite a bit of tidying up at the moment as i have been more concerned of keeping the plants happy and growing well than the looks...But as the plants grow, they are easier to keep happy and the looks of their area greatly improves without compromising their needs. I also desperately need a chipper now as my bigger palms(Washingtonia for the time being) are producing a great number of big dead leafs i cannot put anywhere to recycle the nutrients as they are and dismantling them is a chore...A few tenths of their dead leafs have already been burned for lack of time and its a shame...

The main thing for orchids is to have some mature evergreen trees to mount them on and to spray/water them very often(i have them on daily irrigation,2x per day in summer...). So the first thing to do is to grow some trees and palms for them, unless you already have suitable ones :)

Ah,no need for envy, you can do it yourself if you like! :) Land is cheap here. Its all about what you want, cause if you want something bad enough, you just find a way to do it! :)
