"Mrs. Doris Smith has invited us to visit her late husband Dent Smith's palm garden in Daytona. For those who don't know, Dent Smith was the founder of the International Palm Society and was the first to plant a large number of tropical palms that far north. And since this is the 50th anniversary of the IPS many chapters are visiting.  While Dent was successful in growing palms Doris tells me that since his death hurricanes and hard freezes have reduced the numbers quite a bit.  Ed Brown in his nice article with photos in the March issue of "Palms--Journal of the International Palm Society" says there are still a good number of large mature specimens we don't see here.

I told Mrs. Smith ( she says to just call her Doris) we will arrive in the early afternoon (1:30 - 2:00).  That should give everyone a chance to eat lunch.  I'm sure there are quite a number of eateries on the way."

If you would like to attend and need contact information, please PM or reply to this post.
