Eric in Orlando 4,844 Report post Posted October 8, 2008 Hi all! I'm looking for seeds of Schefflera taiwaniana or other hardy Schefflera's. Does anyone know a seed supplier or has anyone got some spare seed of this species? Kind regards, Remko. We are growing Schefflera pentaphylla (S. octophylla). This is a fairly hardy species, has tolerated mid 20sF with no damage. Ours flowers but has never set seed.
mppalms 5 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Hi, Eric. Is this the species that grows in Hong Kong? It looks like what I saw toward the top of Victoria peak. Jason
_Keith 772 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 I have one here as well in 9a. At my former home in 8b/9a I threw it away as a houseplant in the woods next door. And when I say threw it away, I mean just that, I hurled it over a ditch into the woods. When I moved 8 years ago, I noticed it was still growing in the woods so I dug it up and took it with me. It continued to grow in 9a and when I moved again 3 years ago I dug it up and took it with me again. Today it is approx 8 feet wide x 7 feet tall. It took some minor burn back at 24 degrees and was nearly unfazed at 26 degrees last year. But to my knowledge it has never flowered. Should I do anything to encourage it to bloom next year? Eric in Orlando 4,844 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Here is a big specimen that was planted in 1969. It is growing at a wholesale nursery NW of Orlando. In the big freeze of 12/89, it froze only about halfway down. Granted it is in between heated greenhouses but it dropped to 19-20F 2 nights in Orlando and this area is a cold poket that might have saw down to about 16-17F. The common S. actinophylla were froze to the ground or even killed outright.
Wai`anae Steve 18 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Don't know which one we have here in the islands, but.....it has become a damm weed in the forests. Wai`anae STeve
fastfeat 131 Report post Posted October 9, 2008 Eric-- That's a cool-looking tree. There are some young ones at the Broward County extension office in Davie but they are probably too young to bloom. I'll check for flowering/seed the next time I'm in that area. I wonder if there's one at Flamingo Gardens? Steve-- Most likely that the species running wild in Hawaii is Schefflera actinophylla. It is a noxious weed here in South Florida as well. It often starts as an epiphyte in tree crotches.
