INICIO

Once the insect reaches the plant begins to build galleries within a radius of no more than 6 cm at the base of it, the galleries at the plant can reach up to 9 cm within the same.

En palmas adultas no he detectado ataques.

Saludos y suerte

Excuse my bad English.

I tell you my experiences with Strategus.

The insect places the eggs in galleries in the floor that arrive at 30–40 cm of depth. When the temperatures increase and it begins the season of rains, spring ends and beginnings of the summer, the young scarabs leave the galleries and they begin to eat the palms with ferocious hunger.

They prefer young palms, of up to 7-8 cm of trunk diameter that not yet has become hard. In one night they can cross it without inconveniences.

In my property I have had attacks in P. canariensis, P. datilera, P. roebelleni, P. reclinata, A. alexandrae, R regia, S romanzoffiana, C nucifera, All youths. In mature palms I have not detected attacks.

The insect attacks the palms in the soil and also in plastic containers to those that it perforates easily.

In my case, I have two different situations: the control in the greenhouse and the control of the young plants in the field.

In the greenhouse it is relatively easy since it is a relatively small and enclosed surface and protecting the entrance of the insect, you can control the damages.

For it, 30 days before the dear dates of the first attacks phosphoric insecticide is pulverized that they act as systemic and then we apply Cipemetrina, especially in the floor that acts as of contact.

As in the greenhouses the watering is frequent and the scarabs are activated with the humidity, we apply Cipermetrina every 10 days. This repeats until approximately half-filled of February. That is to say that we pulverize approx. 10 times with Cipermetrina and approx. 3 -4 with phosphoric. It is not simple neither economic, but the damages are minimum, (1%)

The great problem is the plantation to open field. There is not a completely effective method.

The best thing is to pulverize the soil with Temik (carbamato–Bayer) diluted in water, to reason of 1,5 Kg /Ha. (150 gr x 200 l of water) before the attacks begin and to repeat every 30 days.

An alternative been worth it is to use Furadan instead of Temik

In both cases it should be been very cautious in the applications since are very toxic products. Especially not to pulverize near water courses neither in days of wind

Then, make a maintenance pulverizing with Cipermetrina every 10 days or after each rain.

By the way, we await damages among 5-8%

Hello to all, this is my first reply in the spanish forum, for I don't speak spanish... thanks to Linda for letting me know about the topic!

Anyhow, this is a topic that I am very interested in and wanted to share what I have learned in fighting this insect. Over the years I've lost many palms to the rhino beetle, which caused me to find a means to deter them. My solution is overly simple but it works... I use rocks around my palm trunks so the beetle can not bur into the ground around the trunk. The rocks are 1/2" to 1" inch in size. I place them around the trunk of the palm at a depth of 2" inches deep and about 8-12" inches out away from the trunk (see picture - rocked palm). Note that the rocks go up against the trunk, this is very important as you do not want to leave a space for the beetle to penetrate through the rocks. This simple method has worked very well for me and I've never had a beetle attack any palm that I used this method on.

If you do find a beetle hole around a palm (see picture #1), you can get them out by using a garden hose to fill the beetle hole (cavity) with water. I turn on the water and stick the open end of the hose into the hole. I keep it there till I see the water is bubbling out of the hole, this forces all the air pockets out of the cavity. I then let the water continue to run next to the hole (see picture #2) so the water keeps the cavity full of water. This forces the beetle to come up for air (see picture #3). When the beetle emerges, take a hand shovel and scoop the beetle out of the hole and kill it (see picture #4). Hope this helps and hope my spanish speaking friends understand what I am trying to say here. I wish you good luck in protecting your palms. Jv

Translation:

Thank you so much JV!!

Isn't that something?

Seeing that beetle come out

with the water?

In order for the water technique to work, you need to

scout your plants daily. The beetles will bore a hole in the ground at night.

The hole will be about 5 cm-15cm, from the base of the palm. It is best to catch

it the next morning, before damage is done to the palm.

Hi JV :

Their method is effective when you have few palms. But I have 10.000 palms planted in field.

I should use chemical methods of control
