I'm pretty sure that's the Virgin Mary.  She'll pop out when the next leaf base falls off.

I don't think they're big on the Virgin Mary in Malaysia!

Leilani Estates, 25 mls/40 km south of Hilo, Big Island of Hawai'i. Elevation 880 ft/270 m. Average rainfall 140 inches/3550 mm

Apparently a face is the most common image for humans to see in other things, because it is the most familiar shape, which is why we often see faces in clouds and other natural formations, although that does seem quite clearly face like.  What might cause such deformity?

Neofolis,

I was having the same exact thought, what could create a deformity such as that? Possibly a parasite??

Bo,

Actually, Mary is quite a revered individual in Islam since she did give birth to a respected prophet in Islam, Jesus, as a virgin.

It's probably caused by the next infloresence pushing from underneath.  If you look closely you can see the outline of where the infloresence structure connects to the trunk just like all the others.  I'd bet money that's what it is.

Yea, it is most definitely the next infloresence under the oldest frond crown shaft. Very wierd though. Theres something odd about the shape of the exposed infloresences also. They seem bunched up. Maybe some nutrient issue?

Sure does look like a face.

Good call Dave.... Easter island does come to mind!

Looks more like a torso than a face.  I've never seen a face with big googly eyes like that, not even the late Marty Feldman.
