I'll also note that these are pretty easy to protect. I covered them with a moving blanket last year when we hit 8F. They were damaged, but they weren't smoked. This year, I protected them when we went down to 23F. Above 25F, I've given them no protection. They're really cool palms, especially for us zone pushers.

Hi Buffy. How long is it planted in the ground? If i remember well you lost a Butia eriospatha x S.glaucescens in a cold spell.....

Carambeí, 2nd tableland of the State Paraná , south Brazil.

Alt:1030m. Native palms: Queen, B. eriospatha, B. microspadix, Allagoptera leucocalyx , A.campestris, Geonoma schottiana, Trithrinax acanthocoma. Subtr. climate, some frosty nights. No dry season. August: driest month. Rain:1700mm

I am seeking for cold hardy palms!

In the ground 3 or 4 years. The special thing is how easy they are to protect. This year, I didn't protect it until temperatures went below 25F. I'm guessing this may be the most cold hardy Syagrus, because even if it's not, the suckering habit gives it the ability to return.

Hello. I’d like to know if at that age the palm tree has thorns on the larger leaves.

Thank you.

All the pinnae are acuminate (pointy leaf ends).  No other armament. They're not like Phoenix pointy, but pointy indeed.

Mine has recovered quickly from the big freeze. It's blooming again.  This is a great dwarf palm.  The acuminate tips are the only downside.

Excellent information on this palm in this thread, thanks for sharing!

The two I have left are almost five years old grown from seed (had a handful more but they entered into a hybridization program here locally).   Looks like I may be finding a spot for these in the ground after all...

Guys... y'all gotta share or sell seed. This palm must be shared widely amongst those in marginal climates. It's insane this bad boy isn't everywhere.

I must agree, really surprising it's not more widely grown.

I bought this and a few dwarf Butia varieties from Rare Palm Seeds in 2016.  They averaged about $130 per 100 seeds and we had really poor germination rates unfortunately.  I'm talking talking around 1%....

Surprisingly though Rich has two of his Campyosplatha that are flowering at just five years old, so that's promising for sure to start getting some seed.

With that I'm curious though what Alberto and Buffy have seen with seed production from there's....

Plenty of flowering. Hasn't held any seeds.  I have one that just finished setting that looks a little more promising.

Your success rate was still better than my 0%!  I don't know of anyone who bought seeds from @caixeta a few years ago who had success.  :badday:

I'll assume you're letting it self-pollinate?

Well, I don’t feel so bad then.  Didn’t realize it was universal.

To be fair it was a small sample size.  But if you're in the club that makes 4 of us that I am aware of.  Maybe the seeds spent too much time under the X-ray between Brasil and the US affecting the viability?

My original set of 10 seeds back when RPS first offered it yielded 5 seedlings out of 10 seeds. Must have been fresh.

How long ago was that?  The ones I germinated were received five years ago and some are already flowering, which is really surprising to me
