It was a 6.0 far out in deep waters of the Gulf of Mexico, according to USGS, about 10:55 am eastern daylight savings time.  People apparently felt it on the Florida east coast.  I think I was driving at the time, so missed it.  Best news story is at the St. Petersburg Times.

Rusty on Pine Is.

I was outside at the time, and didnt feel a thing...it was a mid-plate tremor.......supposed to happen along boundaries and not in the middle of the plate.....atypical, anyway.

And there was another one just this past Feb. Darn, missed that one too! ......hmmm, I wonder if this is a sign of some  extra plate activity??

We may get some guesses from the experts this week.  The Gulf doesn't have anything special on its deep floor, except, I guess, some deep oil-bearing sediments.  Certainly no plate boundaries (look north of Puerto Rico for that--lots of earthquakes, and PR has suffered tsunamis).

I'm sure oil companies are familiar with the Gulf terrain.
