Having been commenting on how appauling our August has been, the statistics are now out.  Temperature above average, contributing to the second warmest summer on record.

Oddly enough, I thought last August was really nice and yet the average temperature was exactly the same as this year.  I think there are two contributory factors, firstly this August was somewhat wetter than normal and our levels of sunshine were the second lowest since 1987.  Secondly, we had our hottest ever July with abundant sunshine, so by comparison August with an average temperature 3.2°C/5.8°F lower, over 50mm more rain and over 48% less sunshine seemed worse than it in fact was.

My statistics are taken from the MET office and are averages for the whole of England & Wales.

Does anyone have statistics for August to share?

After a scorching July, with an average hi/lo of 36/20 we had a pretty average August with hi/lo of 33/16.  September is off to a scorching start though, every day about 35 and most morning lows above 20.

Driest on record, I turned 52, Brisbane broncos starting winning again, the ekka had huge crowds, No westerly winds occurred. August is a month where I buy a lot of palms and hang out for September and October. Winter ends.

Happy Gardening

Even in July, which might have been the stickiest month ever recorded in LA, the best we could do was an average dewpoint of 16C (61F) and a maximum dewpoint of 23C (74F).

Then I guess you guys wouldnt have appreciated August's maximum dewpoint of 82.4F then?  LOL.

That being said, dewpoints in that range are usually only transitional in nature (at least thats what my station has logged this summer).

The plot for today (thus far obviously) shown below represents pretty much a typical day here weather-wise.  The westerly breeze off the Gulf starts gaining momentum in the afternoon and thankfully keeps temps around 90-92F most of the time.  One can see the flatlining of the temperature coinciding with the increase in westerly winds.
