"mealy bug" Attalea-mottled petiole

Eric in Orlando

Recommended Posts

I noticed the other day our Attalea brejinhoensis has developed a nice mottled petiole, similar to the "Mealy Bug" Dypsis, D. mananjarensis. The markings really stand out against the dark green;

In my book ´´Pameiras Brasileiras e Exóticas Cultivadas´´ it is called Orbignya brejinhoensis. I grows with ´´carnaúbas´´in a place that is periodically flooded. It probably need a lot of water!

Its been in the ground about 6 years now, not a fast grower. The seed was collected by Dr, Noblick from MBC near Oliveira dos Brejinhos, Bahia, Brazil at 1400ft, adjacent to mountains and where many underground springs seep out of the mountains.

  • 6 years later...

I just saw this plant yesterday during the CFPACS meeting for the second time, and it's one, if not my favorite palm in Leu's collection. The first time I saw it was after the 2009-2010 cold snaps, and it was undamage. Thank you to Eric for the garden tour, keep up the good work. And thank you to the CFPACS staff for all that you do.
