There are a number of odd and worrisome wacky things going on with the Forum. None of the normal fixes or maintenance are working.

Be assured I am aware of this, and am trying everything I can think of. I am awaiting some experts with this software to reply to my inquiries. Let's hope they can help.

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

Everything seems to be working normally here, but I am sure you will stay on top of things.  I'm sure you have all of our support Dean.

So far, I'm noting anything wacky.  At least with the software for the Forum.

Let's keep our forum fun and friendly.

There was some wacky things going on with the "Who's online" and where day at feature, but that's not too important.

Fix it Dean, don't be a slacker, what do you think we are paying you for ?

Wal's got it --- goofy stuff is happening with those types of features. Although not necessary features, I fear it may be the beginnings of some database problems, which can never be good.

I hate to complain so I will :P

I don't speak Imperial and Fahrenheit means nothing to me.

When I give metric measurements, I try to have them converted for those who don't speak metric.

Would it kill Imperialists  ???  to do the same?

I still don't know what a "four gallon" plant is!

I thought it was my problem only the other day when I couldn't get into the forum. It said something like 'couldn't link to the database' or something like that. I closed it and came again again in half an hour and it was fine. I hope it is not something major.

We're talking Imperial force gallons    :o

Hi Adam, I used to get bugged by that as well, I used to do the conversion, you know include the farenheit as well as the celcius, but did the Imperial forces of the US Galactic empire ever do that ? no sir and that's why I plan to form the rebel alliance and steal their death star of old world measurements right out of the palmeral system and whack it into the chipper.

See how their dark lords cope with that lot

Dean,

Due to the photo size limit increase, I tried posting pictures as an attachment today, but it isn’t working. I type my message, select a picture using the “browse” button and click “add reply”. It seems to be working at first, but takes forever and then I finally get a message that internet explorer cannot display the webpage.

If it is, try again. Sometimes an upload can abort.

Hi Dean

I notice sometimes it will not allow you to log into the main forum

Solution is go to another part of the forum, then come back to the main forum for log on.

Do not why, but it works

Wish I could tell everyone things are getting better, but I can't. A tech type from the hosting company tried his hand at fixing the latest glitches and presto chango, no Forum at all.

Things could limp along for a while, or we could find a fix, or...................................I won't say it. :(

This software is redlining and something will need to be done soon. I would encourage everyone to check their Control Panel and make sure their email addresses are up to date in case I need to contact everyone with updates about the situation, in the event something happens to the Forum.

Thanks Kim,

The big problem facing us is that this software has no upgrade. So to upgrade to better software may mean that we would have to start all over again. :(

Attempts to try and convert this data into a usable form for import into one of the newer forum platforms has proven problematic, if not impossible.

So it is a possibility that to get a new and improved Forum, it may mean a fresh start.

I got an error message last night when I tried to sign on. It said access was denied and something about my paths being hidden? There was a wacky error message there too.

There was a post on another forum warning people that the Plumeria101 website was infecting people with Level 5 computer viruses, worms and trojans. Apparently someone rigged it out of spite, boredom, whatever. Hopefully no one has done that to PalmTalk.

i do not find any of those problems on my side ! but few members are not highlighted below the page but suddenly i see they have posted in a thread or so and disappeared once again...very funny situation which i call it as the stealth mode..

the view calender is visible once & sometimes not...

And those who are celeberating their birthdays are also not highlighted..but our modelator had already taken note of this..

if not for the above small glitches..i do not have any problem..the pages now respond even faster than before..iam just feeling the pulse of BroadBand performance.. :)

hope everything turns out to be okay soon...

Is it that we are running a forum much bigger than any of the software designers envisaged would happen?

I'm not a software engineer, but is it possible to run different sub forums on different servers using there own separate packages. This would mean that it would take longer to over run any one particular package. It could mean some features may not work though. Just a thought. Maybe it's of no use.  :)

This is crap Dean. If this iteraton of The Forum is coming to an end then so be it. The true enthusiaists will re-register and continue on. But, from a business perspective (even if non profit), the IPS better damn well invest in some forum software and a service provider that can satisfy the demands of the IPS members and palmtalk forum members.

I agree. The IPS should have a very long term plan for the Forum. No one envisioned what the Forum would become. So the technical and financial resources to maintain a Forum such as this are not fully in place. I am trying my best to work with what I (we) have at our disposal.

It has been several years since the development and upgrading of this software was abandoned. There is no support available for problems that crop up. The ability to convert (save) the present data into a format that could be imported into new state of the art software is problematic. We are working on it.

Best case scenario is we can save what we have and convert and integrate to a new platform that has a future with all the old threads preserved. Worse case, we archive this Forum and start over, with confidence that we have supported software that is constantly being improved and maintained. I can only work as fast as the IPS allows me to.

This has nothing to do with our Internet Service Provider. Our problems are due solely to weak overused dead software (shareware).

Thanks to those of you who help make this a fun and friendly forum.

You are doing a great job Dean, and I know the frustrations of being dependant on a software title that is no longer receiving support. It is scary to think of starting all over again. I have become slightly hesitant to start a topic, if it becomes inexplicably necessary to start it over again. I have noticed the one problem with the "Who is online" feature. I have a screenshot of what it looks to me. Ignore the watermark, which is not what shows up.

Adam from Oz Posted on: Feb. 08 2008,22:49

There are several conversion calculators online that were mentioned that do the job, including volume. I have one that I use regularly, since whenever I can, I will post the conversions in the text. I know some quick conversions in my head, but it is not as accurate as taking the time to use the conversion calculator. It slows down the rate in which I can post, but I know since this is a world-wide Forum, it is appreciated. By the way, a 4 gallon plant is the same as a 17.6 liter container by volume, using dry measurements.

Ryan

- The screenshot of the error from my point of view. The shareware I use to take it has that nice watermark in the middle. It should just show my name in the row. If the board does get "revamped" again, will we get an ETA on when it happens?

Look folks, this is useless for pot measure comparisons of palms, so forget it, I've tried before.

Here in OZ for example, we measure pots by diameter at the top of a round pot. Supposedly the rest of the pot (depth) has a natural and proportionate matching depth to the diameter so for example the rootball growth of the palm suits the diameter. Differs of course for different palm species.

It doesn't matter if it's imperial forces or metric though, it's all about the age of the palm, which is what you pay for really. That's how they should be displayed at a nursery imo, assuming the potting up has been carried out correctly. Arch purpurea 5 years old - $35.

Temp conversions on the other hand can be shown and if the poster takes his/her time, they can do a conversion for the reader or let the reader do the conversion, sometimes I do when I post, sometimes I don't, depends if I'm feeling generous or not  :) .

Happy Gardening

It sounds like it is merely a matter of time until Palmtalk will be forced into moving to a new platform.  Wouldn't it be better to pro-actively make the move rather than try to recover and make the move after a major failure?  The archive works fine for the old board, and it wouldn't hurt to archive this as well, at least it would be accessible.  Making choices ahead of time will allow for a smooth transition, less down time, and therefore fewer lost participants (which is critical, in my view).  It's not that members need bells and whistles, but ease of use and consistent availability.  If the site crashes, that is the worst outcome.

What can we members do to encourage replacement of the outdated software for the IPS?
