Wow, super garden!   How long has some of this stuff been in the ground???? All of the Phoenix species look great....although i have to say i have a fondness lurking still for the Trachys.....I used to live in MD and had 7 of em in the ground, most between 6 and 9 feet.

Been told they dont do well in south Fla, but I think I'm gonna try it anyway....thanks for the pics, keep plantin'!

Thanks everyone for all the kind words.  I am in Zone 9a in Central FL, Plant City.  I know a few of my palms Archontophoenix, Carpie, etc. may not do well here long term but last 3 winters we only had a few hours below freezing one year so they've been real rockets.  Been at this house for about 7 1/2 years and started planting about a year after moving in.  Had 3 tiny live oak trees and 3 bushes in the yard when we moved in, oaks are history.  Tried a few other palms lost to illness Liv Drudei, Trachy Takil, Copernecia Alba, Triangle.  With limited space and Zone 9a am limited in choices.  Need thin (don't need much space) and hardy plants.  May try another Alba in my one good empty space this fall, I really like their look.

Pete,

Just curious  what size were the piccabeans/cunninghamiana, and carpentarias, when you planted them?I have been thinking about both of those at my mothers in Poncianna just NE of you,but was worried about freeze/frost?

The frost/ freeze of Valentines day 2/14/2006 ,didn't do any damage to those two species?

thanks,

Scott

Scott,

Not sure but I think they were all 3 to 5 gal and maybe about 2 to 3 feet tall above top of pot.  Guess global warming may be helping???

What a great looking E.ferox. My favorite cycad.

Nice too to see Scott (gsn) refer one of the original common palm names (picabeen) instead that plastic overused generalised name.

Happy Gardening

Cheers,

Scott,

We only had minor frost burn on a few fronds the last 3 years and next new fronds were fine.

Wal...Picked up the ferox from Tom Broome about 4 years ago and has been going like a champ with 2 new flushes a year and getting big quick.

Petewx1,

We can compare notes on A. cunninghamiana and Carpentaria after the next cold snap.  The gravel looks kinda neat.  I have just a strip around the house, then beds (usually with landscape cloth and mulch) beyond.  Partly thanks to bermuda grass that sneaks around in the lawn, I'm working toward separating some of the beds from the grass with concrete-paver pathways, otherwise known as the Separation Barrier or Zone of Death for the bermudagrass
