Some pics of the garden....

Rusty on Pine Is.

Recommended Posts

Well, I was going post some pics of my place at some point, and thought I had lots of time, but this last episode with tropical weather (that turned out for the best, by the way) showed that the potential is always there for our photos to be a record of what was, instead of what is…not much fun in posting reverse “before and after”  photos, is there?

Even though this set of my vernacular palm collection this is a pretty common lot of plants, when I bought the place in ’00, there was nothing green on the property…it was a bare lot, and even the grass was brown, so I am kinda pleased with the transformation…..The planting continues (doesn’t it always?).   Maybe later on I will post some pics of the front garden and  smaller plants later on

….anyway, here is some of “Jackass Flatts” on Pine Island,  FL…..

…..this is a variegated Sabal palmetto…. I just transplanted it in January of this year, so the crown is a little sparse

Dypsis lutescens growng at the edge of the shade garden…..common, but I really like the way the silver of the trunks and crownshaft  holds in the shade

Rusty - beautiful!  What a nice collection - wow.

The lutescens may be common, but how many palms can boast of crownshafts in pale green, blue-green, and gold, along with delicate graceful fronds?  Yours looks like a beauty.

Rusty-

Oh what the rest of us just a short drive to your north wouldnt give for your climate!  Those extra few degrees make all the difference in the end.

Your plantings look superb.

You know...there IS a Palm Island, Florida - wouldn't you guess?

Here is my famous SW Florida map, Palm Island is circled. It is accessbile only by boat and only golf carts are allowed on the island. It is 100% transient and a shame it couldn't become unique and away from the developer's hand. Nonetheless, it is a destination on my travels by sea when I head south towards Ft. Myers on my boat.

PS - Rusty, some great pictures - I would love to come and visit sometime for the day.  :P

Hi Rusty

You have done what most people with a tropical flair would love to have and considering 6 years in the making, well done.

Here are some pics of my garden after some 18years using plants of mostly tropical origin throughout in a climate bordering on warm temperate to subtropical.

Cheers Mike

Hey, thanks everybody for the nice comments!

BTW, Mike, how about posting those pictures again and labling them?....your garden looks great, would really like to see more.

Here are some more of Jackass Flatts…this is the first shade area I was able to plant…AKA the Queen grove….again, pretty common, but I wanted shade and I wanted it in a few years, not a decade….it worked!...It’s a nice spot for shade plants….and there is a deck in the midst of all that mess., a pretty nice place to sit with a cold one at the end of the day.
